This study is a leadership biography which provides, through the lens of Black feminist thought, an alternative view and understanding of the leadership of Black women. Specifically, this analysis highlights ways in which Black women, frequently not identified by the dominant society as leaders, have and can become leaders. Lessons are drawn from the life of Anna Julia Cooper that provides new insights in leadership that heretofore were not evident. Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) have a list of outstanding accomplishments that span over a century; however, this segment of higher education continues to be underfunded and remains in a position of justifying its existence in a postracial America. The issues facing HBCUs are significant. Race-based legislation has created a dual system of American higher education that adversely affects these minority serving institutions, impacting the quality of education they dispense and producing potentially negative effects on vulnerable and under-served collegians. Sex And Race Differences In Faculty Salaries, Tenure, Rank, And Productivity: Why, On Average, Do Women, African Americans, And Hispanics Have Lower Salaries, Tenure, And Rank?, Michael T. Nettles, Laura W. Perna

This study examined the status and conditions of salaries, tenure, rank attainment, and productivity of men and women college faculty and faculty of each of five racial groups. It is based on a subset of data on 8,114 faculty members drawn from the 1992-93 National Study of Postsecondary Faculty. The results, based on descriptive and multivariate analyses, indicate that, even after controlling for experience, education, productivity, and institutional characteristics, women received 11.3 percent lower salaries than men, had lower probabilities than men of being tenured, and were less likely than men to be full professors. The percentage of minority professionals in the major accounting firms has risen only 2 percentage points since 1976. Black members of a national collegiate honor society were surveyed to see if their perceptions of the accounting profession lead them to select other majors. The nonaccounting students perceived the accounting profession very positively in providing long-term financial rewards and availability of employment. The nonfinancial characteristics of lifestyle, work environment, and nature of accounting work were perceived poorly by respondents.
