A Primer On Copyright And Fair Use, Ann E. Biswas, Charles J. Russo Jan 2012

A Primer On Copyright And Fair Use, Ann E. Biswas, Charles J. Russo

English Faculty Publications

One student creates a video for class using a Lady Gaga song. Another puts together a PowerPoint presentation about the Vietnam War using images she found online. A third student adds a link to a YouTube video in a blog post for an English class. One teacher photocopies and distributes articles from a national newspaper. Another teacher records a television documentary at home and shows it to her class.

Did those students and teachers violate copyright law? The complex, evolving laws governing copyright and fair use are muddied by the rapid growth and use of technology in schools, yet it's …

Book Review Of Gearon, Liam: On Holy Ground - The Theory And Practice Of Religious Education, Ken Badley Jan 2012

Book Review Of Gearon, Liam: On Holy Ground - The Theory And Practice Of Religious Education, Ken Badley

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "With On Holy Ground, Routledge adds a thoughtful and welcome volume to its growing list of titles related to religious education and Christian education .Gearon begins by taking his readers on a sobering tour of the rejection of the sacred, which rejection he views as the root of the modern project .After making stops at Darwin, Kant, and Marx, Gearon notes that religious education in the modern period requires 'a close reading of the texts of modernity' (p. 4). While Gearon does not burden his readers with too many details of such a reading, he does provide evidence …

Book Review Of Shortt, John's Bible-Shaped Teaching, Ken Badley Jan 2012

Book Review Of Shortt, John's Bible-Shaped Teaching, Ken Badley

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "What might it mean for Christian teachers to have their work shaped by the Bible? What might it mean for people who name Christ to have their whole lives shaped by the Bible, regardless of their profession? John Shortt wants to answer these questions in his accessible book, Bible Shaped Teaching .Shortt addresses his readers directly with the expository prose his readers will likely expect, but he seamlessly incorporates stories and even builds his answers around stories .This book is not about how to teach, but teachers who read it and take it seriously will likely view their teaching …

Book Review Of Ronald B. Hoch And David P. Smith’S Old School, New Clothes: The Cultural Blindness Of Christian Education, Ken Badley Jan 2012

Book Review Of Ronald B. Hoch And David P. Smith’S Old School, New Clothes: The Cultural Blindness Of Christian Education, Ken Badley

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "In Old Schoo; New Clothes, Hoch and Smith accuse Christian schools of being blind to the forces and forms of modernity, in fact not only blind, but founded on the very same principles as public schools. This cultural blindness extends to the institutions that train Christian school teachers, to administrators, teachers and parents. Hoch and Smith want to explore the roots of this widespread cultural blindness and its effects, and they want to point to ways forward."

Grace (Chapter One In Faithful Teaching: Values And Themes For Teaching, Learning, And Leading Purposeful And Principled Education), Amy Lynn Dee

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "There was a large coatroom in the back of the class, perfect for storing the boots and coats required in the winter days of my third year in school. It also served as a great place to hide if math was not of particular interest. Mrs. Callahan, realizing she was missing a difficult and resistant math student, kept teaching as she made her way to the door of the coatroom to take the hideaway, Arthur, by surprise. She pushed the door open, and as she entered to sweep aside the hanging coats in order to reveal the missing student, …

Book Review: Cross Purposes: Pierce V. Society Of Sisters And The Struggle Over Compulsory Public Education, Amy Lynn Dee Jan 2012

Book Review: Cross Purposes: Pierce V. Society Of Sisters And The Struggle Over Compulsory Public Education, Amy Lynn Dee

Faculty Publications - College of Education

Excerpt: "Contradicting the unappealing cover and stodgy title, Abrams has crafted an engaging and revealing narrative connecting politicians, Klansmen, Masons, the Vatican, educators, parents, and citizens into an account that borders on intrigue but also elucidates and interprets the birth and defeat of a movement that resulted in landmark legislation. The book moves far beyond an explanation of Pierce v. Society of Sisters and provides an inside look at the major players and the motivations behind the Oregon School Bill. Readers witness the unbridled bigotry and hubris of the individuals supporting the School Bill in the early 1900s in Oregon …

The Integration Of Faith, Learning And Life, Brenda B. Mackay Jan 2012

The Integration Of Faith, Learning And Life, Brenda B. Mackay

Faculty Integration Papers

This paper will deal with the concept of Biblical integration. Biblical integration can be compared to painting a beautiful picture that uses exquisite colors of various oils. Individually, each color is attractive and alive, but integrated into a whole by the hand of the master artist, the colors cry out with the beauty of a coherent, unified image. So it is, that integrating the colors of faith, learning and life under the Master’s hand has the potential for creating a stimulating and attractive picture that reflects the splendor of the great Master Artist. According to I Corinthians 10:31, it is, …

God And The Engineer: An Integration Paper, Timothy R. Tuinstra

Faculty Integration Papers

Cedarville University exists to equip Christian students for lifelong leadership and service marked by excellence and grounded in biblical truth. So states the mission statement of this great institution. The challenge for her faculty is to flesh out this mission in individual courses, laboratories, and interactions with students across the campus. This is the mandate of “biblical integration”. The challenge for Christian professors is to see the whole realm of knowledge holistically and to teach their students to do the same. Greg Bahnsen describes well the task of integration when he says, “...God’s word demands unreserved allegiance to God and …

Backwards By Design Project Assessment Write-Up, Michelle Saint Jan 2012

Backwards By Design Project Assessment Write-Up, Michelle Saint

Backward by Design Mini-Studies

In Fall 2012, I taught Phil 355: Aesthetics and the Philosophy of Art. I used this course as an opportunity to test a new pedagogical technique. I will call this pedagogical technique the Incremental Exercises Model (IEM). Below, I will quickly summarize the course and its learning goals. Second, I will explain my previous method of meeting these learning goals. Third, I will explain IEM and how I implemented it in this particular class. Finally, I will provide some concluding observations about the successes and failures of this technique.

Backwards By Design Implementation Report, Kristina Luce Jan 2012

Backwards By Design Implementation Report, Kristina Luce

Backward by Design Mini-Studies

As part of my participation in the Backwards by Design Retreat during summer of 2012, I chose to design the first course of the three-part series of courses on writing required for the Art History Major. A/HI 271: Introduction to Writing and Critical Thinking is also a GUR.

My goal overarching goal was to implement the idea of a threshold concept within the course, and during the retreat I identified that concept as:

In academic writing, well-grounded claims are understood to emerge out of evidence, but in art historical writing, as in any interpretive writing, it is essential to understand …

A Process For Engagement With Threshold Concepts In Spanish Composition, Sean Dwyer Jan 2012

A Process For Engagement With Threshold Concepts In Spanish Composition, Sean Dwyer

Backward by Design Mini-Studies

Numerous practices and assignments discussed at the 2012 Backwards by Design Curriculum Workshop appeal to me as sources of creativity in the classroom. Some will suit courses I teach in the future. For this year, I faced an issue: I am working with students whose classroom vocabulary is equivalent to that of a three-year-old, because I am teaching first-year Spanish.

The most applicable idea, one that energized me greatly, was the identification of threshold concepts. Working backward from that identification, I sought ways to implement practices that would, I hoped, bring those concepts permanently into my students’ approach to writing …

A Racial Impact Analysis Of Hb 1075/Sb 201, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Patrice Banks, Cydny Neville, Sookyung Oh, Keith Rogers Jr. Jan 2012

A Racial Impact Analysis Of Hb 1075/Sb 201, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Patrice Banks, Cydny Neville, Sookyung Oh, Keith Rogers Jr.

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

The economic and social consequences of untreated (or under-treated) substance abuse among minors are significant. This report provides a racial impact analysis of HB 1075/SB 201, legislation approved in the 2012 General Assembly session that seeks to improve access and use of substance and alcohol services by minors. In short, this policy could go a long way to ensure that families are properly educated about these life-changing (and life-saving) programs; however our analysis raises concerns related to cultural competency that may serve to undermine the legislation’s goal. Virginia is incredibly diverse and its communities vary widely with its assets and …

A Racial Impact Analysis Of Hb 462, Grace E. Harris Leadership Institute, Virginia Commonwealth University, Daphne Bryan, William Randolph, Tarvaris Mccoy

L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs Publications

The adoption of House Bill 462 into law brings forth questions about the probable impact on the physical, mental, emotional and financial well-being of the women in Virginia. In particular, analysis of its effect on the minority and underserved female population is required. Understanding the origin of this new legislation and the thinking behind its proposal and subsequent adoption dictates an endeavor into the backgrounds and intended goals of its sponsors and supporters. Proponents of HB 462 were unresponsive to requests for an interview to expound on their perspective about the importance of the legislation. This precipitated the use of …

Prevalence And Correlates For School Truancy Among Pupils In Grades 7-10: Results From The 2004 Zambia Global School-Based Health Survey, Adamson S. Muula, Emmanuel Rudatsikira, Olusegun Babaniyi, Peter Songolo, Seter Siziya Jan 2012

Prevalence And Correlates For School Truancy Among Pupils In Grades 7-10: Results From The 2004 Zambia Global School-Based Health Survey, Adamson S. Muula, Emmanuel Rudatsikira, Olusegun Babaniyi, Peter Songolo, Seter Siziya

Community & Environmental Health Faculty Publications

Background

There are limited data on the prevalence and associated factors of truancy in southern Africa. Yet truancy should attract the attention of public health professionals, educators and policy makers as it may be associated with adolescent problem behaviours. The objectives of the study were to estimate the prevalence and determine correlates of school truancy among pupils in Zambia.

Findings

We used data collected in 2004 in the Zambia Global School-based Health Survey. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify factors associated with truancy. A total of 2257 pupils participated in the survey of whom 53.9% were male. Overall 58.8% …

Linguistic Discrimination In Writing Assessment: How Raters React To African American “Errors,” Esl Errors, And Standard English Errors On A State-Mandated Writing Exam, David M. Johnson, Lewis Vanbrackle Jan 2012

Linguistic Discrimination In Writing Assessment: How Raters React To African American “Errors,” Esl Errors, And Standard English Errors On A State-Mandated Writing Exam, David M. Johnson, Lewis Vanbrackle

Faculty and Research Publications

Raters of Georgia''s (USA) state-mandated college-level writing exam, which is intended to ensure a minimal university-level writing competency, are trained to grade holistically when assessing these exams. A guiding principle in holistic grading is to not focus exclusively on any one aspect of writing but rather to give equal weight to style, vocabulary, mechanics, content, and development. This study details how raters react to “errors” typical of African American English writers, of ESL writers, and of standard American English writers. Using a log-linear model to generate odds ratios for comparison of essays with these error types, results indicate linguistic discrimination …
