Recent statistics tell us that the number of jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) related fields are growing at a rapid rate, it is projected that STEM related careers will grow 17% between 2008 and 2018 (Langdon, n.d.). Within these areas lies agriculture. Given the shift of career opportunities, such as in the areas of research and development, a change has to be made in the way students are educated within agriculture. The purpose of this study was to determine the favorable factors that positively affect the longevity and retention of agricultural educators in the state of Kentucky. This issue was examined by answering the following questions: What are the primary reasons you decided to become an agricultural teacher? Why have you decided to stay in the agricultural education profession for five or more years? What are some of the barriers that you have encountered during your teaching career that you have had to overcome that may have caused you to leave the profession? Countless research suggests that secondary agricultural education programs could benefit all students regardless of school characteristics and geographic location, yet many secondary schools have yet to include agricultural education as part of their curricular offerings. In response, numerous studies have been conducted in recent years throughout the United States regarding how secondary agricultural education programs are perceived by school leaders. Predicting Student Success In The Introduction To Animal Science Course At Western Kentucky University, Margaret Zoglmann

Student predictors may be useful to universities in determining students' future success in college courses. The students enrolled in Introduction to Animal Science (ANSC 140) at Western Kentucky University participated in the study. The students completed identical subjective and objective assessments at the beginning and the end of the semester they were enrolled in the course. Students ranked their knowledge of course matter on a scale of 1 to 100 for each of the 49 course outcomes. Additionally, students completed a demographic survey at the beginning of the course. The final student knowledge assessment tool was a 50 question multiple-choice …

Methods To Evaluate And Predict Student Success In Introduction To Animal Science At Western Kentucky University, Matthew Deppe

Outcomes assessment is the process of determining student progress in a class or academic program. Students, (n = 306), from six freshman-level introductory animal science classes at Western Kentucky University (WKU) were given subjective and objective evaluation instruments on the first and last day of class. Students self evaluated competencies on each of forty-nine course outcomes using a scale of 1-100. Twenty-one demographic questions were also answered. Students were given the same 50-question examination following completion of the subjective assessment on the first and last day of class.
