An Enduring Voice In American Indian Education: The Arizona State University Center For Indian Education, 1959-1999, Jeffrey P. Shepherd

Jeffrey P Shepherd

This article provides a narrative analysis of the history of the Center for Indian Education at Arizona State University. As the premier center for native educational issues, the CIE played a crucial role in raising awareness about educational disparities on Indian reservations. The Center trained thousands of future teachers that have built lasting educational systems for native children across the country. In addition, the CIE shaped state and national educational policy by playing a historic role in the civil rights activities of the 1960s and 1970s. Today, the Center continues to contribute to educational training and policy across the state …

Now We Go To Their School: Desegregation And Its Contemporary Legacy, Abe Feuerstein, Sue Ellen Henry Dec 1998

Now We Go To Their School: Desegregation And Its Contemporary Legacy, Abe Feuerstein, Sue Ellen Henry

Abe Feuerstein

This article explores one southern community's response to the 1954 Brown decision and its subsequent history of dealing with school desegregation. This local perspective is developed using historical data focusing on events immediately following the Brown decision, which provide a contextfor events leading up to a decision in the inid-1980s to consolidate the community's middle school students to reduce perceptions of inequality based on race. This consolidated school is the focus of the second half of the article, which analyzes the current status of desegregation in the school. Although the school has been desegregated, it is far from integrated. Many …

The Convergent Validity Of Reading Assessments At The Secondary Level (Thesis), Kelly Cross Dec 1998

The Convergent Validity Of Reading Assessments At The Secondary Level (Thesis), Kelly Cross

Kelly L. Cross

This study compares the results of four secondary level reading assessments in order to determine their convergent validity. Convergent validity is the process or result of finding that two or more indicators thought to assess the same variable correlate with each other (Harris & Hodges, 1995). During my examination of reading assessments, I found that four types: standardized reading tests, informal reading inventories, cloze technique reading assessments, and oral reading accuracy analysis from authentic materials. This study compares the results of these different types of reading assessments, rather than evaluating which "brand" of the same type of reading assessment is …

Street Children In Film, Irving Epstein Dec 1998

Street Children In Film, Irving Epstein

Irving Epstein

In examining the depiction of street children in three classic films: Kids, Pixote, and Salaam Bombay, I argue that the respective directors play upon our protean concepts of “the street” and “the child” in order to offer social criticism of three types of states: the consumerist state, the authoritarian state, and the neocolonialist state. In each film, street life is used as a metaphor for the way in which the state expresses its authority. In spite of their differences, the directors’ share gendered views of children and childhood innocence, and see the street as offering its inhabitants the opportunities for …

Student Participation In Mathematics Courses In Australian Secondary Schools, John Ainley, Peter Daly Dec 1998

Student Participation In Mathematics Courses In Australian Secondary Schools, John Ainley, Peter Daly

Dr John Ainley

Participation in advanced levels of mathematics in secondary school is ofinterest to those involved in educational policy and practice as well as those involved in research. This paper uses multilevel analyses (including a trichotomous outcome variable) of longitudinal data from a nationally representative sample of Australian schools to investigate the influence of a number of factors on participation in mathematics (advanced, general, or none) in the final year of secondary school. The results suggest that the major influences on mathematics participation are gender and prior mathematics achievement. Both influences are substantial and independent of each other. Building a strong foundation …

This report provides key information on assessment and reporting of literacy and numeracy achievement. The study indicates the critical issues for stakeholders in relation to the assessment and reporting of performance outcomes of students with specific educational needs against literacy and numeracy benchmarks. It underlines the importance of accurately assessing and reporting the performance of students with special needs so that their specific needs are not overlooked.

Can We Tell The Difference And Does It Matter? Differences In Achievement Between Girls And Boys In Australian Senior Secondary Education, Gabrielle Matters, Reg Allen, Ken Gray Dec 1998

Can We Tell The Difference And Does It Matter? Differences In Achievement Between Girls And Boys In Australian Senior Secondary Education, Gabrielle Matters, Reg Allen, Ken Gray

Dr Gabrielle Matters

The nature and interpretation of differences between the achievements of females and males in senior secondary school studies in Australia, and the implications for policy and practice of these perceived differences, are showing signs of change. The way-s in which these issues are discussed publicly across Australia are reviewed and then matched against indications that have emerged from data in one state (Queensland) and from other, published studies. This analysis suggests that there are important notions of gendered achievement that may not be receiving due consideration by those who formulate policy or analyse practice.

Persistence Among Adult Basic Education Students In Pre-Ged Classes, John Comings, Andrea Parella, Lisa Soricone Dec 1998

Persistence Among Adult Basic Education Students In Pre-Ged Classes, John Comings, Andrea Parella, Lisa Soricone

John P. Comings

The first phase of a persistence study used research as a tool to develop advice for practitioners on how to help adults persist in their studies. The study team defined persistence as adults who stay in programs for as long as they can, engage in self-directed study when they must drop out of their programs, and return to programs as soon as the demands of their lives allow. The team read previous studies and related literature, talked with practitioners about how they have tried to help adult students persist longer in their studies, and interviewed 150 pre-General Educational Development program …

Empowering Classroom Teachers For The 21st Century: Meeting The Challenge Of Advancing Children's Mathematical Development, Catherine Pearn Dec 1998

Empowering Classroom Teachers For The 21st Century: Meeting The Challenge Of Advancing Children's Mathematical Development, Catherine Pearn

Catherine Pearn

In this paper, the specific concerns for literacy and numeracy as we enter a new era are addressed through a discussion of an innovative mathematics early intervention program, which the author and classroom teachers have developed and applied. 'Mathematics Intervention' is an innovative program developed by three classroom teachers to identify, then assist, children in year 1 'at risk' of not coping with the current mathematics curriculum. The program incorporates assessment tools and learning activities based on recent research about children's early numerical learning. It develops the basic concepts of number upon which children build their understanding of mathematics. All …

The Importance Of Efficient Strategies In Developing Numeracy In The Early Years, Catherine Pearn Dec 1998

The Importance Of Efficient Strategies In Developing Numeracy In The Early Years, Catherine Pearn

Catherine Pearn

A mathematics intervention program has been established at Elm Primary School for children at risk of not succeeding with Grade 1 mathematics. The program is based on current research that shows that children become numerate by progressing through five counting stages. The development and results of clinical interviews used for testing are discussed along with strategies that have been used to assist children overcome common difficulties identified by the testing. The importance for classroom teachers to be able to identify each child's strategies and thus their counting stage is stressed as a starting point for numeracy teaching in early years. …

Assessing Principals' Interpersonal Behaviour With Their Teachers, John Cresswell, D Fisher Dec 1998

Assessing Principals' Interpersonal Behaviour With Their Teachers, John Cresswell, D Fisher

Dr John Cresswell

In the past 25 years much attention has been given to the development and use of instruments to assess the qualities of the classroom and school environment from the perspectives of students and teachers. This paper describes the development, validation and application of an instrument, the Principal Interaction Questionnaire, to measure principals' interpersonal behaviour in a school. The new instrument was based on the Questionnaire on Teacher Interaction, first devised in The Netherlands. It contains eight scales to measure various aspects of a principal's interpersonal behaviour such as Directive behaviour, Strict/Inflexible behaviour and Understanding behaviour. The questionnaire was sent to …
