(Re)Defining Student Success: A Qualitative Study Of Black Undergraduate Women Pursuing Veterinary Medicine .Pdf, Christa Porter, Yeukai Mlambo, Joy Hannibal, Nadeeka Karunaratne

The qualitative study explored how Black preveterinary undergraduate women defined success. Two focus groups consisting of 13 women were conducted, with four attending the predominately White host institution (PWI), termed State University in this study, and nine who were enrolled at six different institutions, designated Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU). The 13 interviewees participated in a preveterinary summer program at State University, and self-selected to take part in a focus group. Participants defined their success according to immediate and long-term goal achievement facilitated by their upbringing and precollegiate socialization, identity, self-awareness, and available systems of support. This evaluation compares evidence from the literature with Australia’s experience in supporting
teacher development in a range of developing countries. It uses case studies to good effect
in explaining choices made, the extent to which expectations were or were not met, and the
lessons for future Australian assistance for teacher development.
The evaluation found mixed results. In cooperation with governments and other donors,
Australia has made positive contributions, such as improving teacher frameworks and
curriculums, and training teachers through a range of interventions. However, there is room
to improve—for example, in enhancing policy, strengthening analysis and negotiating new

A review of relevant recent research indicates that girls’ issues are generally off the radar screen in local pre-K-12 schools in the United States. This is particularly problematic because gender inequities continue to be perpetuated in schools through largely unconscious cultural mores and pedagogies. Gender inequities are deeply rooted in historical, philosophical, and cultural narratives of gender so that we, educators, are ourselves articulations of gender-based narratives. Moreover, the intersectionalities between gender, race, English speaking ability, sexuality, class, religion, ability, poverty etc. greatly exacerbate this problem. In this feminist, constructivist case study we explored how 28 classified, administrative, and faculty women’s experiences working at one university for 25−40 years have changed. Participants ranged from 45- to 70-years-old at the time of their interview, with more than half older than 60, and 84% identified as White. Women with extended history of service to a single institution provide a unique lens for examining institutional change and gendered structures as they have, in their longevity, thrived or survived. 'I Don't Really Know, So It's A Guess': Women's Reasons For Breast Cancer Risk Estimation., Nancy Humpel, Sandra C. Jones

Women of all ages have been found to overestimate both the incidence and the mortality rate from breast cancer and the reasons for this are unclear. A qualitative study asked eighty three women (mean age = 44 years) how likely they thought they were to get breast cancer and to explain the reasoning behind their choice. Based on their responses, women's perceptions were categorised as: no risk (5%); reasonably accurate (30%); overestimated (22%); and greatly overestimated (43%). Four main themes emerged from the reasons given: 'Don't know/guess', 'family history' of breast cancer, 'age' related reasoning, and making their decision from …

Marriage Vows And Economic Discrimination: The Married Teacher Problem, Sabrina Thomas

This study analyzes the rapid increase of economic discrimination against married women teachers in the early twentieth century, particularly during the Depression. It challenges the notion that economic discrimination against married women teachers was simple, easy, and largely was unchallenged. I argue that the creation and proliferation of marriage bars in the early twentieth century involved a compounded and multifaceted set of economic and social concerns. Support for this argument is accomplished by examination of the national debate on marriage bars as well as careful investigation of the local debate illustrated in Huntington, West Virginia.

Improvements in cancer detection and treatment have led to consistent declines in mortality from many cancers. However, many patients present for treatment at a point where more invasive treatment is required and/or treatment outcomes are less than optimal. One factor that has been consistently shown to be associated with late diagnosis and treatment is delay in seeking help for symptoms. This paper reviews the literature on women's awareness of cancer symptoms and aims to identify knowledge gaps that need to be addressed in order to improve help-seeking behaviors. This study examines the educational persistence of women of African descent (WOAD) in pursuit of a doctorate degree at universities in the southeastern United States. WOAD are women of African ancestry born outside the African continent. These women are heirs to an inner dogged determination and spirit to survive despite all odds (Pulliam, 2003, p. 337).This study used Ellis’s (1997) Three Stages for Graduate Student Development as the conceptual framework to examine the persistent strategies used by these women to persist to the completion of their studies.

In-depth, qualitative interviews were conducted with Emirati students at a women’s college in the UAE to investigate their learning backgrounds, perceptions, and transformational learning experiences while students.
