A Review Of Literature: What Is An Ideal Internationalised School?, Sherry J. Hattingh
Sherene Hattingh
This article presents the findings of a literature review conducted from 2005 to 2013 on the elements involved when a school internationalises. In the past there has been predominant focus on the teachers or the international students at schools with little emphasis on a whole school approach to internationalisation. This review considers the body of literature on internationalisation and synthesises the findings using a stage play metaphor to construct the ideal performance of a school-wide approach to internationalising. The first act by the school leadership is that of organising and managing the school, the second act involves the international student …

Earning American College Credits In China: New Model Of Transfer College Credit Programs, Jiayi Hu, Linda Serra Hagedorn
Linda Serra Hagedorn
The concept of “Transfer College Credit Programs (TCCP)” has spread to the far corners of the Earth. There are two types of TCCPs: 1) high school students around the globe planning on attending American colleges or universities enroll in college-level courses while still in high school in their home country and earn American college credits which are later transferred to their American institutions, and 2) currently enrolled international undergraduate students taking courses offered during summer break in their home countries and transferring the credits back to their university. This study investigates the popularity of these programs in China, and illustrates …

International graduate students have been a sizeable segment of the student body in the U.S. higher educational system. However, this student population has not completely been understood by higher education administrators and faculty and their diverse needs have not been met by existing services on campuses. This study examined factors associated with the students’ academic performance in the United States. The findings indicated that factors associated with masters and doctoral students’ academic performances were greatly different. This study suggests policies, services and programs to meet this population’s unique needs and to assist in their academic success in the United States.
International Students’ Engagement With Effective Educational Practices: A Cross-National Comparison, Daniel Edwards
International Students’ Engagement With Effective Educational Practices: A Cross-National Comparison, Daniel Edwards
Dr Daniel Edwards
Findings from the Australasian Survey of Student Engagement (AUSSE) provide a new and unique means of tracking international students’ participation in higher education. The AUSSE is the largest cross-institutional collection of data from currently enrolled students in Australasia, and has formative links with the 1,200-institution USA National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). The AUSSE has been validated rigorously for use in Australasia, and taps into fundamental aspects of educational quality – students’ engagement with effective educational practices, including important beyond class experiences. Evidence-based feedback such as this plays a critical role in growing and improving Australasia’s international higher education industry. …

International Engagements: The Characteristics Of International Students’ Engagement With University, Daniel Edwards
International Engagements: The Characteristics Of International Students’ Engagement With University, Daniel Edwards
Dr Daniel Edwards
The international student market is important and lucrative for Australian universities and the Australian economy in general. In 2006, nearly 15 per cent of all income of Australian tertiary providers was derived from international student fees, a total of $2.3 billion. This makes international education Australia’s largest service export and its third largest export industry overall. Between 2001 and 2006, enrolments of undergraduate international students in Australian universities increased 43.3 per cent. By comparison, the growth in enrolments of domestic undergraduate students in this time was much smaller at 1.7 per cent (DEST, 2001 - 2006). In 2006, 14.2 per …

Canada: Managing Diversity And Social Cohesion Under Bill C-50 And Beyond, Hristina Petrova
Canada: Managing Diversity And Social Cohesion Under Bill C-50 And Beyond, Hristina Petrova
Hristina Petrova
The recent changes in the Canadian immigration system have led to the development of other programs designed to attract highly skilled immigrants. Bill C-50 was implemented in order to reduce the immigration backlog and match supply with demand on the labour market. Whatever the scheme, there’s one particular group of immigrants whose entry into the country has been encouraged via numerous parallel initiatives – the one of international students. Their retention is strategic because they could be just what Canada needs – young people proficient in the official languages, with Canadian credentials and work experience.
