A literature review identified 12 strategies that have been empirically linked to improvements in graduate employability. This script, which portrays a discussion by a five-person committee about whether to grant tenure to faculty member, is a vehicle for discussing the meanings of scholarship and standards, the nature of truth and realism, and the constructivist view of learning. The argument about the quality of the faculty member's scholarship leads into a consideration of whether she is being judged by white male standards. The discussion evolves into a consideration of realist philosophy, the meaning of truth, and the prevalence of a dialogical coherence philosophy. In this paper, we report how we put a newly developed Twitter application to work in the context of a Knowledge Management course taught at the Singapore Management University (SMU) allowing students to post and view relevant tweets in an organized manner for the benefit of collaborative class discussions and learning. Multiple steps are necessary for a well-designed Promise-type scholarship program. Through multiple community visits, Upjohn Institute staff members will assess the need and capacity of the Hamilton, Canada community for such a scholarship. Based on those assessments, staff members will present a program design that takes into consideration such parameters as its universality, funding structure, geographic eligibility, academic supports, and management/administration of the program. The purpose of this project was to support the research and writing of a book assessing the value of place-based (“Promise”) scholarship programs. Since the first such program was announced in Kalamazoo in 2005, this model has been replicated to one degree or another in many different settings. Yet there have been only limited efforts to evaluate the impact of existing Promise programs and virtually no comparative work examining different approaches to designing and implementing place-based scholarships. In order to study whether universal college scholarships can reduce inequality in education, we study one aspect of the Kalamazoo Promise that resembles a “natural experiment.” We use the fact that the surprise announcement of the scholarship created a large change in expected college tuition costs that varied across different groups of students based on past enrollment decisions. Using a differences-in-differences analysis, we compare the outcomes of Promise-eligible students to ineligible students, before and after the Promise. Outcomes studied include college enrollment, whether the student has obtained a college degree, and after-college earnings. We use the economical and racial diversity …

The researchers framed this program evaluation project as an investigation of the influences on teaching practices of a teaching center program participants and non-participants. Changes in teaching practices and the motivations for these changes of fifteen randomly chosen faculty were studied. Session participants will develop and analyze brief case studies using abbreviated data sets and three of the methods that were used in the study. Through hands on analysis of data, session participants will enhance their ability to evaluate the conclusions drawn by the researchers and become familiar with useful analytical frameworks that they can use in their own research. …

Within higher education settings, transgender people are at risk for discrimination and harassment within housing and bathrooms. Yet, few have examined this topic using quantitative data or compared the experiences of subgroups of transgender individuals to predict denial of access to these spaces. The current study utilizes the National Transgender Discrimination Survey to research this issue. Findings indicate that being transgender and having another marginalized identity matters for students’ access to housing and bathrooms. Trans women are at greater risk than gender non-conforming people for being denied access to school housing and bathrooms. Implications for practice and research are detailed.

Research indicates that transgender individuals frequently experience marginalization and interpersonal victimization within college and university settings. Missing from the literature is a discussion of what can be done to address such patterns in higher education, based upon empirical data gathered from transgender and gender non-conforming students, staff, and faculty. The present study aims to fill this gap by reporting on solutions offered by a sample of 30 individuals in one U.S. state while integrating a lens of intersectionality. The Upjohn Institute will oversee a multi-faceted research initiative assessing the impact of place-based scholarships on post-secondary attainment and local economic development. The project involves the development of an integrated database covering post-secondary enrollment and attainment in five Promise communities, a series of working papers based on this data by researchers in five Promise communities using a common analytical framework, and the development of a Web-based clearinghouse of promising practices for Promise communities that includes best-practices information on how to track the impact of Promise programs.
