The Lived Experience Of Online Educators: Insights From Construction Management, William Sher, Anthony Williams, Maria T. Northcote Dec 2016

The Lived Experience Of Online Educators: Insights From Construction Management, William Sher, Anthony Williams, Maria T. Northcote

Maria Northcote

Academics in higher education institutions often experience the conflicting demands of teaching, research and administration. With the growth of online education these staff are frequently required to design, develop, teach, facilitate and, in some cases, administer online courses. Cumulatively these additional tasks challenge academics, not only in terms of the personal professional development but also in accommodating the range of tasks expected of them. This paper reports the findings of a study which investigated the lived experience of construction management academics teaching at universities in Australia. The study adopted a lived experience research approach that enabled the lives of construction …

Universities in Australia face a range of challenges as they renew curricula. Several of these arise from the federal government’s compliance monitoring entities which focus on academic standards and quality assurance. In addition, the sector is experiencing increased emphasis on research performance and postgraduate education. Against this backdrop, this paper examines academic leadership, management and staff development, and considers the implications of these processes on construction management higher education. This paper draws on data gathered from surveys, interviews and focus groups with leaders in construction-related academic disciplines across Australia, and provides a critical review of their attitudes and concerns. The …

Postscript Essay For Phd Thesis Dissertation [Ethny A. Stewart, "The Disciplinary Practices And Processes Of Critique In A Third-Year Architecture Design Studio," University Of California Santa Barbara,Ca, December 2016], Thomas Fowler Iv

Thomas Fowler IV, DPACSA, FAIA

This is a timely research project – the study of the disciplinary practices and processes of the design studio. From my experiences of over 2 decades teaching at three institutions (22 at this central coast university) and a similar number of years working as a practicing architect, this research comes at an important time — since this learning environment has not been the focus of much prior research. There are also a number of myths that are not true about the design studio, that range from a classroom environment that has no structure and the difficultly in assessing what is …

Community Partnership As A Foundation For Scholarship, Pedagogy, And Research—An Interactive Session, Nadia Anderson, Carl A. Rogers, Lynn Paxson, Kristin Nelson, Courtney Long, Julia Badenhope Nov 2016

Community Partnership As A Foundation For Scholarship, Pedagogy, And Research—An Interactive Session, Nadia Anderson, Carl A. Rogers, Lynn Paxson, Kristin Nelson, Courtney Long, Julia Badenhope

Nadia M. Anderson

In Good Deeds Good Design, Roberta Feldman states that empowering community design facilitates effective, informed decision-making by “people who have traditionally had minimal say” (Feldman, 2003, 110). Doing this requires designers to consider communities as partners rather than clients and see their work as a collective endeavor rather than a professional gift. At Iowa State University, faculty in multiple departments are using partnership-based outreach methods to generate disciplinary and trans-disciplinary projects engaging studio teaching, research, and scholarship. Critical to these projects is the idea that partnership inverts the traditional power relationship between designers and underserved communities by valuing local knowledge …

Group-Work: Does It Have To Be That Bad?, Anthony Williams, L Henry, R Tucker, N Abassi Oct 2016

Group-Work: Does It Have To Be That Bad?, Anthony Williams, L Henry, R Tucker, N Abassi

Anthony Williams

Many accreditation bodies and universities require the graduate attribute of “an ability to work in teams” or to “effectively collaborate”. Students invariably dislike working in groups maintaining that “malingerers ride on the back” of those students who work hard and contribute effectively to the outcomes of the group or team. This is the context in which an ALTC/OLT project was established, the project is to consider ways of enhancing group-work in Architecture and design related disciplines. The project has identified the issues associated with group-work, from the perspective of student and lecturer, and has begun to develop strategies to overcome …

Drawing As Process, Drawing As Creation.Pdf, Andreas Luescher

Andreas Luescher

In this paper I will examine the different pedgogical styles of two Swiss professors, one from the school of architecture, and the other from the school of business. Both educators practice teaching methods for creative thinking, underlined by techniques of representation through drawing and sketching. In this context, the terms drawing and sketching are used interchangeably as tools for knowledge construction and sharing. In the words of Peter Jenny, a Professor Emeritus and Chair of Visual Design at the ETH,one shouldn’t teach only drawing skills, but also visual perception and the joy of experimenting and using one’s imagination. In his …

Between Design And Digital: Bridging The Gaps In Architectural Education, Shelby Doyle, Nick Senske Aug 2016

Between Design And Digital: Bridging The Gaps In Architectural Education, Shelby Doyle, Nick Senske

Shelby Elizabeth Doyle

Developing technologies, such as computational design and digital fabrication, are transforming the design and construction of contemporary architecture. Today, architecture schools are tasked with introducing digital technologies as they are changing, creating an opportunity to develop innovative curricula and democratize access to these skills. However, the understanding of how to teach digital technology as an essential design skill has not kept pace with these rapid changes. Design education and digital technology education continue to be seen as separate loci of learning, separated by pedagogical gaps and teaching mindsets.

Exploring Learning Objectives For Digital Design In Architectural Education, Shelby Doyle, Nick Senske Aug 2016

Exploring Learning Objectives For Digital Design In Architectural Education, Shelby Doyle, Nick Senske

Shelby Elizabeth Doyle

: What are the objectives of teaching digital design in architecture? While this seems a rather primitive inquiry it in fact is loaded with misunderstanding and disagreement. This paper aims to bring accepted educational research about learning objectives into the discussion of digital design’s relationship to architecture. In particular, Bloom’s Taxonomy is introduced and referenced as a tool for creating clarity, transparency, and accountability among educators. The purpose of reflecting upon learning objectives for digital design in architecture is not to produce a definitive list of what students ought to learn. Learning objectives are written for specific curricula, student needs, …

Session C-4: Design Your School’S New Innovation Space, Britta W. Mckenna, Lawrence Bergie

Britta McKenna

Schools are rethinking learning spaces, turning outdated computer labs and tired libraries into vibrant innovation spaces. Maker spaces, collaboration areas and technology hubs that connect applied learning to the real world are emerging. See plans for IMSA's new innovation hub, called IN2, (opening fall 2016) learn how it was designed, and tour IN1 (the prototype of IN2) in a former computer lab. Learners are guided through a design thinking process to reimagine a current space at your school. Participants should come with photos of their potential space/s and room dimensions ready to create a prototype of their new space.

Library As Learning Object: When It Is All About The Building! [Poster], Debbie Morrow May 2016

Library As Learning Object: When It Is All About The Building! [Poster], Debbie Morrow

Debbie Morrow

Have you ever been a "victim of your own success"? We have faculty who want to bring classes to the library, not to learn about information-finding, but to see and touch the technology that is part of the building itself! Hear about how developing a session featuring GVSU's new library building as a "learning object" has become a great opportunity for creating an engaging learning experience for first year students.

Abstract Refining city services is gradually being placed in the hands of the citizens,
or, as in the case of IBM’s initiative, Blet’s build a planet of smarter cities (https://
www-03.ibm.com/press/us/en/pressrelease/35573.wss), at their fingertips. By reducing
cost and gaining control in building smart transportation management systems, IBM
provided a grant to the city of Chicago to reinvigorate Chicago’s K-12 schools and city
college. Similarly, Catherine Bracy (https://www.codeforamerica.org/people/catherinebracy/)
and her team at Code for America are using technology to Bbuild governments
for the people and by the people in the twenty-first century.^ It is evident that smart
cities should accommodate every …

Sketching As Visual Dialogue.Pdf, Andreas Luescher Dec 2015

Sketching As Visual Dialogue.Pdf, Andreas Luescher

Andreas Luescher

Sketching is one of the earliest known forms of communication. It’s a record of thoughts, ideas and visions. It may sound simple, but it’s actually quite complex, because the expression of sketching varies according to an individual’s personal style, visual thinking and imagination, and is also related to one’s context and culture.  Sketching is a form of auto-reflection that encourages the mirroring of events that may not be noticed by the conscious mind, and daydreams that occur frequently in different working and life settings. For architects, these sketches can reveal the desire for a different and more intimate relationship between …
