Explaining Socioeconomic Inequalities In Student Achievement : The Role Of Home And School Factors, Gary Marks, John Cresswell, John Ainley
Dr John Cresswell
This paper examines the extent that material, social, and cultural resources and schools account for the relationship between socioeconomic background and student achievement among 15-year-olds in 30 countries. Generally, cultural factors play a more important role in most countries although in a small minority of countries, material resources have a substantial impact. Most often, social resources have little impact. In many countries, educational differentiation - that is, school tracks and school types, and curriculum tracking within schools - mediates the relationship between socioeconomic background and student achievement. Countries with highly tracked systems tend to show stronger relationships. On average, over …

A Standards-Guided Professional Learning System, Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz
A Standards-Guided Professional Learning System, Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz
Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz
The authors note that teaching is almost alone among the professions in not having profession developed, profession wide standards and a related system of professional learning and certification to assist teachers to attain those standards. The authors argue the case for a standards guided professional learning system (SGPLS) designed to help teachers learn and grow and provide public assurances of the quality of work of those teachers who are able to meet the standards, assist in the development of career paths for teachers and teacher leaders that are based on the demonstration of excellent teaching. They discuss the essential components …

Estandares Profesionales De Practica Y Su Importancia Para La Ensenaza, Lawrence Ingvarson, Elizabeth Kleinhenz
Dr Elizabeth Kleinhenz
For more than three decades educators and policy makers in Australia have been interested in the development of professional standards for teachers. In recent years teacher associations in Australia have been developing their own standards to gain more influence over quality assurance in their profession. This paper aims to provide a broad overview of teaching standards and their use. It begins with an explanation of the idea of teaching standards, pointing out that standards are both statements about what is valued and tools for measurement. A distinction is drawn between ‘profession-wide’ teaching standards and standards developed by agencies like employers, …

Graduate Course Experience 2005 : The Report Of The Course Experience Questionnaire, Hamish Coates, John Ainley, T Johnston, B Guthrie
Dr John Ainley
This report analyses the course experience opinions of those students who completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree from an Australian university in 2004 and who responded to the 2005 Course experience Questionnaire. Several revisions have been incorporated into this report, such as a greater emphasis on results pertaining to postgraduate coursework degrees.

Graduate Course Experience 2006 : The Report Of The Course Experience Questionnaire, Hamish Coates, John Ainley, T Johnston, B Guthrie
Dr John Ainley
This report analyses the course experience perceptions of those students who completed the requirements for a coursework degree from an Australian higher education institution in 2005 and who responded to the 2006 Course Experience Questionnaire (CEQ). It is the 14th report in a series that began in 1993 but it may also be considered to be the 5th in a new series of reports on the expanded CEQ because the structure of the questionnaire since 2002 differs considerably from earlier versions. Several further revisions have been incorporated into this report, such as a greater emphasis on results pertaining to postgraduate …

Analysing Hierarchical Data With Multivariate Outcomes: Beyond Multilevel Regression Models, Siek Khoo
Analysing Hierarchical Data With Multivariate Outcomes: Beyond Multilevel Regression Models, Siek Khoo
Dr Siek Toon Khoo
Multilevel regression models are now well established and widely applied in analyses of hierarchical data – typically to account for variation in only one univariate response variable at level 1. However, many substantive research questions call for more complex models. For the analyses of hierarchical data with multivariate outcomes, multilevel mean and covariance structure modelling in the structural equation modelling framework offers great flexibility and modelling opportunities. This paper describes the basic concepts of two-level mean and covariance structure analysis of hierarchical data, and showcases application examples. The paper focuses on fitting possible models requiring multilevel applications and highlight: (a) …

How will humanity continue to meet its energy needs without destroying the conditions necessary to sustain human life on earth? The search for an answer to this question depends as much on the past as on the present; and as much on the physical sciences as on the social sciences. This book offers a truly trans-disciplinary and trans-cultural look at the problem of energy production and consumption in modern times. Discussing issues of history, politics, science, risk, lifestyle and representation, contributors demonstrate that experiences through time can provide insights into the kinds of solutions that have succeeded, as well as …

Application Of Multivariate Rasch Models In International Large-Scale Educational Assessments, Ray Adams, Margaret Wu, C Carstensen
Application Of Multivariate Rasch Models In International Large-Scale Educational Assessments, Ray Adams, Margaret Wu, C Carstensen
Prof Ray Adams
In large-scale educational assessments, such as the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) and the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), a primary concern is with the estimation of the population-level characteristics of a number of latent variables and the relationships between latent variables and other variables. Typically these studies are undertaken in contexts in which there are constraints on sample size and individual student response time, yet there are high expectations with regard to the breadth of content coverage. These demands and constraints have resulted in such studies using rotated-booklet designs, with each student responding to a …

The standards for teachers of English language and literacy in Australia were developed by the Australian literacy educators association and the Australian association for there teaching of English. The STELLA materials include standards statements, narratives and keywords and questions linked to specific standards. The ALEA STELLA professional learning project was set up to explore ways of using STELLA as a framework for teachers professional learning. In 2005 the project gave teachers in three Australian states an opportunity to work with a mentor to explore the STELLA professional standards, to develop their own professional learning, and to share their stories with …

Foundation Numeracy In Context, Dave Tout, G Motteram
David (Dave) Tout
Foundation Numeracy in Context describes an approach to teaching mathematics based on applied and contextual learning principles. This means that the teaching and learning of mathematics proceeds from a contextual, task-based and investigative point of view—where the mathematics involved is developed from a modelled situation or practical task. Practical investigations and projects are principle vehicles for student learning in such an approach. This text is written for teachers working with students who have become disengaged from learning mathematics during the middle to latter years of secondary schooling, and will likely have had limited success with mathematics. The approach used will …
