Rui Barbosa And The Argument For Teaching The Natural Sciences In The Brazilian Primary School Of The Xix Century [Rui Barbosa E O Ensino De Ciências Naturais Na Escola Brasileira Do Século Xix], Karl M. Lorenz

Karl M Lorenz

The paper discusses the ideas of Rui Barbosa on the importance of teaching science in the primary schools of nineteenth-century Brazil. Barbosa was one of the great parliamentarians of his time and one of Brazil’s most vocal advocates of educational reform in the nineteenth century. In 1882 Barbosa was directed to provide a written assessment of the1878 educational reform of Minister Leonçio de Carvalho. In the document that resulted, Barbosa states his rationale for why and how the natural sciences should be taught in the primary school. This paper relates Barbosa’s ideas on science teaching and argues that he was …

Being The Change I Want To See In The World: Learning And Teaching From The Heart, Gloria Gordon Phd

Gloria Gordon PhD

The author draws on her professional practice as an educator/academic in a UK higher education institution to share her journey, as an African British woman, of becoming the change she wants to see in the world. She shares the process of the radical appropriation of her own unique and creative spiritual ‘I’ and the challenges she is presented with of identifying her particular path of meaning and purpose; of transcending the social construction of black and white identities; of definitive movement towards self realisation and spiritual freedom. The central thrust of the paper is the emphasis on how every individual …

Karl M Lorenz

In Brazil, A New Debate Over Color, Marion Lloyd Feb 2004

In Brazil, A New Debate Over Color, Marion Lloyd

Marion Lloyd

In 2002, the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro made history by passing the first affirmative action law for its state universities. The law reserved 50% of spots for graduates of public high schools and Afrobrazilians. Advocates sited the need to redress historic discrimination and unequal access for elite public universities, while critics argued that the law fomented racism in a country with a long history of racial mixing.

O Collegio De Pedro Ii E A Modernização Do Currículo Da Escola Secundária Brasileira [The College Pedro Ii And The Modernization Of The Secondary School Curriculum In Brazil], Karl M. Lorenz

Karl M Lorenz

Transitions In Elearning Environments: The Australian Army Moves From Interactive Cd-Roms To Web-Based Learning Resources, Diane Newton, Allan Ellis Jan 2004

Transitions In Elearning Environments: The Australian Army Moves From Interactive Cd-Roms To Web-Based Learning Resources, Diane Newton, Allan Ellis

Diane Newton

Organisations with established eLearning programs continue to experience the impact of internally and externally driven change. Sustaining effective eLearning through these changes requires planning that includes an understanding of the organisational culture and the learners' needs. A move to a new eLearning environment can challenge the organisation's communication channels and decision-making culture. Further, producing quality learning resources for technology based training in one eLearning environment does not guarantee an easy transition to another environment. This case study of the Australian Army presents the issues involved within an established eLearning development team that was dealing with rapid change in their work …

Gender Differences In Student Engagement Among African American Undergraduates At Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D., Robert M. Carini, Ph.D., Brian K. Bridges, Ph.D., John C. Hayek, Ph.D. Jan 2004

Gender Differences In Student Engagement Among African American Undergraduates At Historically Black Colleges And Universities, Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D., Robert M. Carini, Ph.D., Brian K. Bridges, Ph.D., John C. Hayek, Ph.D.

Shaun R. Harper, Ph.D.

Differences in student engagement between women and men at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) are examined in this study. Data were collected from 1,167 African American undergraduate students at 12 four-year HBCUs that participated in the National Survey of Student Engagement. Controlling for several factors that might obscure gender differences, the results counter previous research regarding gender gaps on HBCU campuses by illustrating that African American women enjoy an equally engaging experience as their same-race male counterparts.

Untangling Eligibility Requirements Under The Individuals With Disabilities In Education Act, Robert A. Garda Jr. Jan 2004

Untangling Eligibility Requirements Under The Individuals With Disabilities In Education Act, Robert A. Garda Jr.

Robert A. Garda

Finding a child eligible for special education under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is one of the most important, if not the most important, decision that will be made in that child's life. Despite the importance of eligibility determinations the eligibility criteria of IDEA are intricately tangled and often misapplied by courts, hearing officers and inevitably parents and educators. The confusion surrounding eligibility standards leads to the disastrous results of both over-identification and under-identification of IDEA eligible children. This Article attempts to untangle the web of IDEA eligibility standards in order to determine who is entitled to its …

How To Get It. Diagrammatic Reasoning As A Tool Of Knowledge Development And Its Pragmatic Dimension, Michael H.G. Hoffmann Jan 2004

How To Get It. Diagrammatic Reasoning As A Tool Of Knowledge Development And Its Pragmatic Dimension, Michael H.G. Hoffmann

Michael H.G. Hoffmann

Discussions concerning belief revision, theory development, and "creativity" in philosophy and AI, reveal a growing interest in Peirce's concept of abduction. Peirce introduced abduction in an attempt to provide theoretical dignity and clarification to the difficult problem of knowledge generation. He wrote that "An Abduction is Originary in respect to being the only kind of argument which starts a new idea." These discussions, however, have led to considerable debates about the precise way in which Peirce's abduction can be used to explain knowledge generation. The crucial question is that of understanding how we can get the new elements capable of …

Learning By Developing Knowledge Networks. A Semiotic Approach Within A Dialectical Framework, Michael H.G. Hoffmann, Wolf-Michael Roth Jan 2004

Learning By Developing Knowledge Networks. A Semiotic Approach Within A Dialectical Framework, Michael H.G. Hoffmann, Wolf-Michael Roth

Michael H.G. Hoffmann

A central challenge for research on how we should prepare students to manage crossing boundaries between different knowledge settings in life long learning processes is to identify those forms of knowledge that are particularly relevant here. In this paper, we develop by philosophical means the concept of a dialectical system as a general framework to describe the development of knowledge networks that mark the starting point for learning processes, and we use semiotics to discuss (a) the epistemological thesis that any cognitive access to our world of objects is mediated by signs and (b) diagrammatic reasoning and abduction as those …

Doing Research That Makes A Difference, Edlyn Vallejo, Bensimon M. Bensimon, Georgia Bauman, Donald E. Polkinghorne Jan 2004

Doing Research That Makes A Difference, Edlyn Vallejo, Bensimon M. Bensimon, Georgia Bauman, Donald E. Polkinghorne

Edlyn V. Peña

This paper describes the "practitioner-as-researcher" model of research, an alternative methodology that is intended to bring about institutional change. We developed this approach through the Diversity Scorecard project in which we work with teams of practitioners to examine institutional data disaggregated by ethnicity in order to identify inequities in educational outcomes. The practitioners, themselves, conduct the research on their own campuses to discover areas of inequities. This, in turn, impacts their practices and motivation to bring about systemic institutional change.

That Canadian Debate On "Nigerian Idgher Education: Policy And Practice, Eric Chukweru Amadi Dr

Eric Chukweru Amadi Dr

Nigeria's educational system, for now, can be described as a glorious past and a murky present. Scholars have embarked on academic exercises through different routes and yet arriving at the same destination -a demystification of the National Policy 011 Education in realization to .workable and achievable terms. With the same motif in mind. we attempt here, a critique of the various criticism and analysis by Bloom, Woodhouse and Haft. It is revealed that their criticism is an idiosyncratic approach and has serious shortcomings in that it chops the total curriculum into pieces offering momentary convenience but results that are rarely …

Using Tutorials In The Development Of Economics And Management Thinking Skills, Bryane Michael

Bryane Michael (bryane.michael@stcatz.ox.ac.uk)

One of the primary goals of educating in economics and management (E&M) is to teach students to think for themselves rather than repeat text-book theories. Drawing upon my own teaching experiences, I will discuss a framework for tutorial-based teaching of applied E&M thinking. The paper discusses results to date from the use of this framework as well as lessons learned which might be applicable to a range of University and non-University based programmes teaching skills in economics and management.

This paper discusses the need for university libraries in Nigeria to support cyber-education or cyberscience. There is the move from the traditional print-based system to the automated system of library services. Most recently, the birth of digital environments has led to the introduction of virtual libraries and online services which enhance the output of libraries andmeet the demands of users in places where they have been adopted. This paper encourages the support of cyber-science or cyber-education in Nigerian university libraries as a way to meet the changing needs of university communities. It highlights the transitions from the old to the …
