The College Pedro Ii And The Modernization Of The Secondary School Curriculum In Imperial Brazil, Karl M. Lorenz Jul 2003

The College Pedro Ii And The Modernization Of The Secondary School Curriculum In Imperial Brazil, Karl M. Lorenz

Karl M Lorenz

This work examines the role of the curriculum of the College Pedro II to modernize secondary school education in Brazil from 1838 to 1889. It argues that the Imperial Government followed two lines of action in achieving this goal. First, the Court sought to make education in the College exemplary by continuously introducing curriculum models and course content similar to that found in the best schools in Europe. Second, it enacted legislation that induced schools to adopt the program of studies of the College. Because the constitution prohibited the Central Government from directly effecting change in provincial schools, the Court …

Validating Young Children's Feelings And Experiences Of Fear, Reesa Sorin Jan 2003

Validating Young Children's Feelings And Experiences Of Fear, Reesa Sorin

Reesa Sorin

Children experience a wide range of emotions, from happiness and excitement to anger and disgust. When children are happy, their caregivers encourage their expression of happiness and often join in to share this emotion with them. Yet when they are angry, afraid or disgusted, often children are encouraged to suppress or change their emotions. This is particularly true of the emotion of fear. While parents and caregivers currently employ a variety of strategies to respond to fear in young children, some of these methods may be positioning children in ways that increase their fears or invalidate their feelings of fear …

Student Mobility-Reasons, Consequences And Interventions, Reesa Sorin, Rosemary Iloste Jan 2003

Student Mobility-Reasons, Consequences And Interventions, Reesa Sorin, Rosemary Iloste

Reesa Sorin

Mobility in education can mean families moving from city to city or state to state as employment and housing changes for them. However, it can also mean families moving their children from one school to another within the same area, for other, more personal reasons. As student mobility increases, concerns about its impact on the young learner increase (Wright, 1999). Research studies report mobile students to be lower achievers in academic as well as social domains of schooling (Mantzicopoulos & Knutson, 2000; Rumberger & Larson, 1998; Wright, 1999). Student mobility can adversely affect children’s success rate in school, leading to …

La Educación Superior En El Mercado. Configuraciones Emergentes Y Nuevos Proveedores, Roberto Rodríguez-Gómez

The next section assesses secondary edu-cation in Mexico, and the third examines the higher educational system. The final part offers a series of reflections on the tendencies that we are now witnessing, outlining the changes that are required to achieve better articulation between middle and higher education policy and Mexico’s options for growth and development in the near future.

Peirce's "Diagrammatic Reasoning" As A Solution Of The Learning Paradox, Michael H.G. Hoffmann Jan 2003

Peirce's "Diagrammatic Reasoning" As A Solution Of The Learning Paradox, Michael H.G. Hoffmann

Michael H.G. Hoffmann

How can we reach “new” levels of knowledge if “new” means that there is something “evolved” that cannot be generated simply by deduction or by induction from what has been given before. The paper’s first goal is to show that two paradigmatic attempts at solving this so-called “learning paradox,” Plato’s apriorism and Aristotle’s inductivism, form two horns of a dilemma: While the inductivist cannot justify any representation of data without assuming a priori given hypotheses, the apriorist cannot justify why a certain application of given ideas is correct without being caught in an infinite regress. The second goal is to …

Mesocentrism And Students Of Mexican Background: A Community Intervention For Culturally Relevant Instruction, Heriberto Godina Phd Jan 2003

Mesocentrism And Students Of Mexican Background: A Community Intervention For Culturally Relevant Instruction, Heriberto Godina Phd

Heriberto Godina PhD

How does the integration of information about a student's ancestral culture elicit a more positive motivation for their learning in school? Chicano activists in the Southwest exposed middle school students to a program of instruction based on Mesoamerican ancestry. The program's effectiveness is analyzed through a quasi-experiment. A pre- and post-survey measured cultural awareness, desire, effect, reading preference, self-esteem, and self-concept. Informal student narratives were used to interpret treatment effects. Results indicated that the intervention enhanced students' sense of cultural awareness and voluntary reading preferences. Implication for the study include how culturally relevant instruction can be a valuable stepping stone …

Constraints To Resource Management, Eric Chukweru Amadi Dr Jan 2003

Constraints To Resource Management, Eric Chukweru Amadi Dr

Eric Chukweru Amadi Dr

It is axiomatic that the survival of any organization depends greatly on the amount of resources at its disposal. No school system can effectively carry out its functions without sufficient funds at its disposal. Money is required to attract, retain and develop the staff, to maintain thc school plant and procure other materials for effective functioning of the institution. When provided, such resources need to be properly managed. We have attempted an examination of the relevance and application of the them} and principles of resource management in educational organization with a focus on the primary and university sub-sectors within the …

Translation Events In Cross-Language Information Retrieval: Lexical Ambiguity, Lexical Holes, Vocabulary Mismatch, And Correct Translations, Anne R. Diekema Jan 2003

Translation Events In Cross-Language Information Retrieval: Lexical Ambiguity, Lexical Holes, Vocabulary Mismatch, And Correct Translations, Anne R. Diekema

Anne Diekema

Cross-Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) systems enable users to formulate queries in their native language to retrieve documents in foreign languages. Because queries and documents in CLIR do not necessarily share the same language, translation is needed before matching can take

place. This translation step tends to cause a reduction in the retrieval performance of CLIR as compared to monolingual information retrieval.

The prevailing CLIR approach and the focus of this study is query translation. The translation of queries is inherently difficult due to the lack of a one-to-one mapping of a lexical item and its meaning, which creates lexical ambiguity. …
