A panel representing both secondary and higher education discussed the process utilized in Central Ohio through the HS-IHE Alignment Grant to align high school and college curricula and the agreed upon strategies to promote alignment. This session will review the change in philosophy of higher education in the United States from being available only to those that could afford college to the open access and success agenda of today. The influence of the Land Grant colleges and now the community colleges to fulfill this philosophy will be presented. In 2008, the non-profit college access organization, A Call to College, researched the feasibility of extending their services to elementary and middle school students in their partner district, Newark City Schools. This investigation led to a phased, 4-year process to build the PEAK (Providing Early Awareness and Knowledge) Program. PEAK currently provides activity-based programming and specially designed lesson plans for every 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th grader in the district - over 2000 students from 82 classrooms in 11 different buildings.
