Pre-Conference Session: Moving Cfgs Online. Workshop, Julie Moore Dec 2009

Pre-Conference Session: Moving Cfgs Online. Workshop, Julie Moore

Julie A. Moore

This session is for experienced facilitators who are interested in exploring the benefits, strategies and challenges of conducting CFGs in an online environment. While CFGs have traditionally been face-to-face communities, online environments offer great potential for supporting teachers who are geographically dispersed or who desire a learning community outside of their local building. Facilitating in such environments requires an expansion of skill sets beyond those of face-to-face facilitation. Participants in this pre-conference will analyze successful online sessions, discuss strategies for facilitating online CFGs, and share specific web sites that can host online CFGs for free.

The BRIDGE (www.teachersbridge.org) is an online resource and learning community for teachers that provides and avenue for sharing of teacher expertise and experiences. Teachers submit resources (either teacher generated or teacher suggested) that are peer-reviewed and act as an illumination of The Georgia Framework for Teaching. The learning communities support the Critical Friends Group professional learning community model that utilizes norms, facilitators, and conversation protocol to examine teacher work. This paper focuses on the principles underlying the BRIDGE’s purpose and design, the primary features of the BRIDGE, and how the BRIDGE is used to support educators at ...

The Bridge - Teacher Directed Resources And Learning Communities. Poster Session, Julie Moore, Linda Gilbert, Sean Hendricks

Julie A. Moore

The BRIDGE (http://www.teachersbridge.org) is a website where teachers can share their own expertise with other educators by sharing useful resources and by participating in online learning communities. Resources are connected to the Georgia Framework for Teaching, a definition of accomplished teaching adopted by various state agencies in Georgia. Our online communities/groups are specifically designed to support Critical Friends Groups (CFGs), a successful face-to-face learning community model that brings teachers together around their own work and utilizes facilitators and conversation protocols to focus on improving practice. In this poster session, we will show the BRIDGE in detail ...

Using Emerging Online Technologies And Strategies To Support Teacher Induction, Julie Moore, Lynn Kepp, Emily Silberstein, Renee Clift, Lara Hebert

Julie A. Moore

Teacher induction programs (focused on support for those in their first two to three years of teaching) are recognized as an important strategy in keeping teachers in the profession but the quality and substance of such initiatives varies considerably. Online support systems for new teachers are just beginning to emerge, combining established theories of both community development and professional development in new online environments. This panel will highlight three such initiatives and their approach to supporting teacher induction in an online environment: New Teacher Center (University of California, Santa-Cruz), Illinois New Teacher Collaborative (University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign) and the BRIDGE ...

Beginning Teachers’ Use Of Online Resources And Communities., Julie Moore, Boyoung Chae

Julie A. Moore

The purpose of this study is to understand how beginning teachers actually utilize online resources in their everyday teaching contexts. Using a qualitative interview study design, the researchers investigated beginning teachers' use of online resources in three dimensions: professional tasks, emotional/personal support, and teaching practice. The findings revealed that the teachers' primary approach to find the necessary resources was through the use of online search engines. Only a very small number of participants went beyond simply finding ideas. Also, it was found that the participants do not seek help from online resources for emotional and personal support, although they ...

Lessons Learned From Pt3, Julie Moore, Judith Duffield Apr 2006

Lessons Learned From Pt3, Julie Moore, Judith Duffield

Julie A. Moore

Technology integration is a three-pronged effort. Not only do teachers, no matter the level, need to know how to use technology, they need to know how to integrate it into their curriculum. These two prongs were a consistent theme throughout the Preparing Tomorrow's Teachers to Use Technology (PT3) projects. Add access to technology to these and one has a powerful base from which emerge technology-using teachers. PT3 only addressed this third prong during the first round of applications through capacity building grants. These were targeted toward supplying institutions with computers and other hardware and infrastructure necessary to their being ...

Tracing Beginning Teachers’ Use Of An Online Communitiy: A Follow-Up Study. Presentation, Julie Moore, Boyoung Chae Apr 2006

Tracing Beginning Teachers’ Use Of An Online Communitiy: A Follow-Up Study. Presentation, Julie Moore, Boyoung Chae

Julie A. Moore

This study follows-up with beginning teachers who were involved in the Inquiry Learning Forum (ILF) during their pre-service education. The ILF is an online professional development community for teachers built on the theoretical foundations of situated cognition (Lave & Wenger, 1991) and communities of practice (Wenger, 1998). Online communities would appear to have great potential to connect new teachers into the teaching profession. This study indicates that such expectations may be overstated, with competing resources vying for very limited amounts of teachers’ time.
