Numerous reports have discussed the dearth of women in Science, Technology, Engineering; Mathematics (STEM) fields. Almost two-thirds of young children of age group 9-15 state that they enjoy science, but girls’ attitudes and interests change by middle school. During high school, girls and boys take the same number of science courses. In addition, girls perform as well as boys in those courses. Despite comparable performance levels, girls rarely continue studying science at college level. Much has been written about wikis’ reliability and use in the classroom. This research bulletin addresses the negative impacts on institutional welfare that can arise from participating in and supporting wikis. The open nature of the platform, which is fundamental to wiki operation and success, enables these negative consequences. A finite user base that can be determined a priori (e.g., a course roster) minimizes the security implications, hence our discussion in this bulletin primarily concerns open or public wikis that accept contributions from a broad and unknown set of Internet users.

St. John, Hu, and Fisher (2011) define academic capital formation as “social processes that build family knowledge of educational and career options and support navigation through educational systems.” The authors suggest that particular interventions, programs, and services can equip students from lower-income backgrounds and their families with knowledge of and membership in networks that ultimately help them access colleges and universities, attain postsecondary degrees, and transition into the middle class. Given the systemic nature of racial achievement and opportunity gaps in education and their disproportionate impact on Black men, postsecondary institutions alone cannot close them. Participation from multiple stakeholder groups is necessary. This report calls for greater involvement by federal and state policymakers, high school counselors, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA, the policymaking organization for intercollegiate athletics), community–based organizations, and other groups in ongoing efforts to improve the status of Black undergraduate men. The thesis analyzes the science and technology policies in Mexico and Brazil from the 1930s to the present and their impact on the character, missions and scientific production of Latin America´s two leading universities: the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) and the University of Sao Paulo (USP). The author concludes that major differences in those polices, as well as in higher education policies in both countries, largely explain the vastly different character of the two institutions. Increasing numbers of students are participating in study abroad programs. Outcomes associated with these programs have been studied extensively, but relatively little is known about what motivates and influences students to participate. This study investigated factors that motivate and influence students to study on exchange and explored how these factors vary by social identity. The findings support the development of programs, services, and marketing that meet students’ needs.

Chicanos/as are one of the most underrepresented groups in higher education and least likely to complete a baccalaureate degree. Most Chicana/as in California begin and end their postsecondary educational journey at a community college. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand the role classroom faculty institutional agents play in the successful transfer of Chicano/a students. Eight Chicano/a students who transferred and graduated from a university were interviewed and they nominated classroom faculty members viewed as instrumental in their transfer success. This article discusses the findings of a focus group study of 10 African American undergraduate men at a predominantly White Southern research institution. The authors explored African American men’s struggles with persistence through graduation. Findings suggest that prior to college participants faced distracting messages about what it means to attend a predominantly White institution from their families, schools, and community.

As part of UBC’s initiative to facilitate community-based learning, this course gave students the option of participating in a research project that helps a non-profit organization gain better understanding of a specific issue. Whereas most undergraduate economic curricula focus on theory or data analysis, Community-Based Research (CBR) lets students use their theoretical knowledge and analytical skills to help people in their own community
