Academic work and its associated profession make substantial contributions to the socio-economic development of Australia. But rarely is the work or the profession itself front-page news. This needs to change, partly because of the growing significance of academic work, and partly because of diverse pressures facing universities and its professional workforce. The growing significance of the academic profession is juxtaposed, almost in perfect counterpoint, by its shrinking capacity.

In the context of dance education, either as part of physical education or on its own, the assessment of dance performance is used as a benchmark of the students’ progress. This article analyzes the World University Ranking of the Times Higher Education, one of the most important and famous international rankings, with a special emphasis on the how this ranking has been designed and methodologically built up. Starting from a longitudinal study the authors analyze the regional distribution and the linguistic affinities, and the institutional mobility as well, including the variability of the first 200 universities in each edition of this ranking (between 2004 and 2009). This paper provides a review of the priority afforded to the development of pupils’ affective and epistemic development within the contemporary poetry class. The paper reports on the findings of a research project which explored the experience of teaching and learning within the post-primary Leaving Certificate programme in Ireland. The research includes interview and questionnaire data obtained over a three year period from 2007-2010 from 80 post-primary teachers of Leaving Certificate poetry and 200 post-primary Leaving Certificate pupils. The paper highlights the malign impact of summative assessment on teachers’ pedagogical aspirations, identifying widespread professional dissonance amongst the cohort. Resultantly, empirical …

The purpose of the study was to find out factors affecting active community participation in adult literacy and non-formal education programmes in Anambra state. Two research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. The design was descriptive involving 475 respondents selected from participants in the UNICEF assisted adult literacy and non formal education programme through disproportionate stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected using a 27 item questionnaire. Mean scores were used in answering the research questions, while t-test was used in testing the hypothesis at 0.5 level of significance. Epidemiological studies indicate a worldwide increase in the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) over the past decade. ASDs are no longer considered rare conditions. Although the reason(s) for this rise are uncertain, research indicates that specialised intervention at an early age is vital for optimising the outcomes of children with ASD. However, not all children with milder forms of autism will be identified prior to school entrance. Recent special education trends suggest that students with autism spectrum disorders are underrepresented in our schools’ special education programs. The increased awareness and prevalence of autism, together with the clear benefits of early intervention and special education, have created an urgent need for school-based professionals to identify children who may have an autism spectrum disorder. Screening is an important first step for securing the appropriate educational services. The aim of this article is to provide school professionals with a review of five screening instruments that hold promise for identifying school-age children in need of a more in-depth diagnostic assessment.
