Many colleges and universities have come to understand the added educational value of having a more diverse faculty, and some have created specific programs to enhance recruitment, development, and retention of underrepresented faculty. How do these programs help underrepresented faculty start a successful career? How can they help a diverse faculty build thriving, long-term careers in academia? This chapter addresses these questions by sharing the findings and lessons learned from an internal and external assessment of the Excellence in Diversity Fellows Program at the University of Virginia.

The article presents information about the program called "Professors as Writers" at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Massachusetts. The objective of the program is to provide a quiet and comfortable working place for faculty to write. This program was started 15 year back to help the faculty members to write more productively. The organizers of the program invite all college teachers to sign up for the dates and times that suit them at the beginning of the semester. The program sets aside structured time and space for the faculty to write.

This article highlights a faculty development program designed to allow mid-career and senior faculty to effectively apply the capacities of technology to teaching and learning. It provides a profile of senior faculty and their work satisfactions and stresses; describes a senior teaching fellows program, TEACHnology, as one mechanism for senior faculty reviatalization; and suggests the kinds of practices that seem to best support senior faculty in terms of career development.
