Management Education: Valuing 'Differences' In The Classroom, Gloria Gordon Phd
Gloria Gordon PhD
In this paper a discussion is presented for the inclusion of the valuing of 'differences' between people as the cornerstone of hospitality management education curricula using a three-pronged approach. The models advocated for achieving this aim are 'identity development' (Myers, 1991), Action Learning (Revans, 1969) and Awareness and Competence (Howells, 1982). It is argued that the nature of the hospitality industry and the global environment which it serves demands such educational processes if self-aware, critical and ethical managers are to be developed. Empowerment of students through the development of critical thinking skills will enable them to become aware and reflective …

This follow-up study assessed the educational history and current reading proficiencies of 3,959 high school seniors from 24 school districts in 10 U.S. states in 1986. In recent years, a great deal has been said and written about the need to improve teaching in the academy, especially in large research universities. College presidents, national associations representing higher education, private foundations, and individual faculty scholars all have challenged faculty, chairs, deans, campus administrators, and faculty developers to work together to improve support for undergraduate teaching and learning (Bok, 1986; Bowen & Schuster, 1986; Boyer, 1987; Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, 1989; Diamond & Adam, 1993; Seldin & Associates, 1990). Despite such calls for collaborative efforts to improve undergraduate education, faculty developers still often feel alone …

The term "faculty development" has been defined by Jerry G. Gaff as "enhancing the talents, expanding the interests, improving the competence and otherwise facilitating the professional and personal growth of faculty, particularly in their role as instructor." Indeed, faculty development programs in the 1970s have shifted from traditional practices of professional renewal, such as faculty exchanges and research and travel grants, to a new focus on the individual faculty member and the issues he or she confronts as teacher. The attempt to assist faculty members in improving the quality of teaching and learning at Indiana University Northwest, an urban, commuter …
