ALL students, but especially those with obstacles to overcome in their lives, benefit from being connected to school and community resources that can help ensure a smooth and successful transition from one educational environment to the next. This PPT accompanied a webinar by the same title held in April 2013 and included research-proven best practices about student transition programming. Three panelists also shared the successful Elementary to Middle School; Middle School to High School; and High School to Higher Education programs that they have developed and implemented within a variety of settings, both urban and rural.

Laura Meek, Director of Financial Aid at Ohio Dominican University, shared her expert knowledge on these topics. In addition to providing attendees with an overview of both verification and award letters, she provides examples/case studies that will help college access & success professionals, school counselors, and youth-serving organization staff in working with their students.

Most commonly accepted definitions of “college ready” in use today include the phrase “qualified for and able to succeed in entry-level, credit-bearing college courses without the need for remedial coursework.” The key to attaining this global benchmark is rigorous academic preparation with focus, at all grade levels, on curricular alignment, effective advising, and the provision of the supports that students need to attain their academic goals. In 2008, the non-profit college access organization, A Call to College, researched the feasibility of extending their services to elementary and middle school students in their partner district, Newark City Schools. This investigation led to a phased, 4-year process to build the PEAK (Providing Early Awareness and Knowledge) Program. PEAK currently provides activity-based programming and specially designed lesson plans for every 2nd, 4th, 6th, and 8th grader in the district - over 2000 students from 82 classrooms in 11 different buildings.
