Chinese Yuan And The American Dollar, Kimberly D. Scott Nov 2015

Chinese Yuan And The American Dollar, Kimberly D. Scott

Kimberly D Scott

The economic relationship between China and the United States has been a hit and miss discussion over the years. One question, in particular, has stimulated more than speculation, but empirical research of whether we know that China's currency is undervalued is certainly a trigger to perform further research.

Produkt-Orientierte Übersetzung: Weg Von Der Insel, Uwe Muegge Apr 2015

Produkt-Orientierte Übersetzung: Weg Von Der Insel, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Business Model Design Games: Rules And Procedures To Challenge Assumptions And Elicit Surprises, Sune Gudiksen Jan 2015

Business Model Design Games: Rules And Procedures To Challenge Assumptions And Elicit Surprises, Sune Gudiksen

CW Tsai

Previously well-established companies are currently struggling to secure profits, mainly due to the pressure from new communication technology-based business models. Because of this, the business model research field has flourished in recent years, but most of the applied approaches still rely on linear, rational conceptions and causal reasoning. Through three games and three business cases, it is argued that experimental game-like innovation activities can lead the way into another approach to business model development, called ‘business model design games’. This paper illustrates how the application of game rules and procedures can challenge business assumptions and evoke surprises that lead to ...

Product-Centric Translation: What It Is And How Best To Handle It, Uwe Muegge Jan 2015

Product-Centric Translation: What It Is And How Best To Handle It, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Unlike with “general” technical translations, where the text stands on its own, in product-centric translation projects there is a direct link between the source text and a product or service.

How Linkedin Helped Me Land A Vp Position When I Wasn't Even Looking, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Finding a new job can be very time-consuming – or not, especially when you let the new job find you! I recently accepted the position of Vice President of Strategic Technology Solutions at OmniLingua, a translation and localization services company. At the time I received the the company owner's InMail, I was not even looking for a new job! Unbeknownst to me, the hiring process had started after my future employer visited my LinkedIn profile page.

Teaching Translation Technology In The 21st Century, Uwe Muegge Sep 2014

Teaching Translation Technology In The 21st Century, Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

The author's definition of 'technical translation' is pragmatic: Technical translation differs from literary translation in that in a technical translation project, all texts are linked with a product. The product-centric nature of technical translation projects requires that technical translation projects are processed in a translation memory system to ensure terminological and stylistic consistency, among other things.

Teaching Localization: 6 Practices That Make A Difference (Part Ii), Uwe Muegge Feb 2014

Teaching Localization: 6 Practices That Make A Difference (Part Ii), Uwe Muegge

Uwe Muegge

Translation memory (TM) systems have become commonplace in today’s translation courses – sometimes for the wrong reasons. If students are told that the only reason for using a translation memory is to leverage previous translations, these students will not use a TM system for non-repetitive texts. That teaching approach might also be frustrating for students who start with an empty translation memory, as these students may not get any immediate benefit from using TM technology. If, however, students are introduced to the translation memory as a quality assurance tool, the return on investment is instant.

Extending And Accelerating Global Business-Education Partnerships, Dylan Kissane, John Farrell Jan 2014

Extending And Accelerating Global Business-Education Partnerships, Dylan Kissane, John Farrell

Dylan Kissane

Senior management in contemporary graduate business education must respond are the trends that are leaving a marked impact on the traditional business models of business schools. Key stakeholders in the business education ecosystem, including the students, the corporate employers and the business schools themselves, demand more of graduate education in order that their respective careers flourish, future employees have the requisite skills and experience, and business education institutions survive. Yet as in any system, survival is but a minimum requirement; successful programs seek not only to survive but to thrive, embracing the change that these three trends place on graduate ...

Compound Interest And The Power Of Saving, Richard H. Serlin Jan 2014

Compound Interest And The Power Of Saving, Richard H. Serlin

Richard H. Serlin

This is an article with an included assignment that I give to my personal finance 1 students. The first part talks about the power of compound interest. I go into depth about the intuition why it's so powerful, why it takes off, and has been called the eighth wonder of the world. I've haven't seen anywhere else an extensive explanation of the intuition like I have here.

In the second part I give the students a nice assignment to see how much their savings can grow if they invest even a modest amount consistently, month in and ...

Is Industrial And Labour Relations A Misfit As An Academic Programme Floated In Specialised Universities Of Education?, Olukunle Saheed Oludeyi

Olukunle Saheed, OLUDEYI

Some of us who drank from the pot of wisdom and knowledge and who benefited from the technical skills and professional understanding advanced by the premier university of education, Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, consider the upkeep and continuous development of this vast-growing university as a serious subject of concern. Among other issues considered as germane to the university in her quest for excellence in teaching, research and community service, the recent deletion of some courses in the university, is one of such areas of worries to some of us who hold the institution in ...

Decision-Making In Economics: Critical Lessons From Neurobiology, Renato Alas Msc, Kuldeep Kumar, Avik Mukherjee, Munirul Haque Nabin, Sukanto Bhattacharya

Renato A Martins MSc

Book Description: Game Theory has provided an extremely useful tool in enabling economists to venture into unknown areas. Its concepts of conflict and cooperation apply whenever the actions of several agents are interdependent; providing language to formulate as well as to structure, analyze, and understand strategic scenarios. Economic Behavior, Game Theory, and Technology in Emerging Markets explores game theory and its deep impact in developmental economics, specifically the manner in which it provides a way of formalizing institutions. This is particularly important for emerging economies which have not yet received much attention in the academic world. This publication is useful ...

Openorbiter Combined Software Work Breakdown Structure, Jeremy Straub, Timothy Whitney, Tyler Leben, Kelton Karboviak, Zach Maguire, Christoffer Korvald, Scott Kerlin Dec 2013

Openorbiter Combined Software Work Breakdown Structure, Jeremy Straub, Timothy Whitney, Tyler Leben, Kelton Karboviak, Zach Maguire, Christoffer Korvald, Scott Kerlin

Jeremy Straub

As part of CSCI 297, students created work breakdown structures for different areas of the OpenOrbiter project’s software groups. In CSCI 207, they learned about all aspects of project management via experiential learning. They acted as project management ‘consultants’ to the OpenOrbiter software teams. To facilitate the creation of the work breakdown structures, they interviewed team leads, attended team meetings and discussed current progress and needs with members of the teams. In some cases, they collected additional information from reference sources and/or spoke with other teams which would be the ‘customer’ of a particular area of the software ...

The aim of this study is to examine the effect of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) development on country’s scientific ranking as measured by H-index. Moreover, this study applies ICT development sub-indices including ICT Use, ICT Access and ICT skill to find the distinct effect of these sub-indices on country’s H-index. To this purpose, required data for the panel of 14 Middle East countries over the period 1995 to 2009 is collected. Findings of the current study show that ICT development increases the H-index of the sample countries. The results also indicate that ICT Use and ICT Skill ...

Edutourism: The Nigeria Educational Challenges And International Students’ Choice Of Study In Nigerian Universities, Olukunle Saheed Oludeyi, Samuel Olutokunbo Adekalu Oct 2013

Edutourism: The Nigeria Educational Challenges And International Students’ Choice Of Study In Nigerian Universities, Olukunle Saheed Oludeyi, Samuel Olutokunbo Adekalu

Olukunle Saheed, OLUDEYI

This paper takes a cursory look into the various challenges influencing international students and other study-tourists in their choice of study destination with particular emphasis on the ‘pull and push factors’ in Nigeria educational systems. With secondary information and discourse analysis of existing literatures, the study revealed that there are a growing number of outbound Nigerians searching abroad for educational empowerment compared with the fewer number of inbound students-tourists. While pull factors are non-existent, there are numerous push factors in Nigerian educational system which include underfunding, unprecedented industrial unrest (with ASUU being a protagonist), cultism and cult-related violence, poor educational ...

The Dialectics Of Staff Unionism And University Management; Critical Discourse For Effective Educational Service Delivery, Olukunle Saheed Oludeyi, Adebayo Olatunde Akinsanya Sep 2013

The Dialectics Of Staff Unionism And University Management; Critical Discourse For Effective Educational Service Delivery, Olukunle Saheed Oludeyi, Adebayo Olatunde Akinsanya

Olukunle Saheed, OLUDEYI

This paper was poised by the lingering lamentations about the acute fall in standard of education and rapid knowledge declination among Nigerians today. The problem has become so intense that Nigerian ivory towers are now accused of producing ill-prepared and unemployable graduates who seriously lack the skills and competencies needed to positively assist the nation in its quest for growth and development. Unfortunately apart from poor university management, suspicious and insincere, if not selfish relationship between leadership of staff unions and leadership of university management is another factor impeding adequate and effective educational service delivery in Nigeria today. With pluralist ...

A Theory Without A Movement, A Hope Without A Name: The Future Of Marxism In A Post-Marxist World, Justin Schwartz Jun 2013

A Theory Without A Movement, A Hope Without A Name: The Future Of Marxism In A Post-Marxist World, Justin Schwartz

Justin Schwartz

Just as Marx's insights into capitalism have been most strikingly vindicated by the rise of neoliberalism and the near-collapse of the world economy, Marxism as social movement has become bereft of support. Is there any point in people who find Marx's analysis useful in clinging to the term "Marxism" - which Marx himself rejected -- at time when self-identified Marxist organizations and societies have collapsed or renounced the identification, and Marxism own working class constituency rejects the term? I set aside bad reasons to give on "Marxism," such as that the theory is purportedly refuted, that its adoption leads necessarily ...

Examining The Transition To A Four-Day School Week And Investigating Post-Change Faculty/Staff Work-Life Balance: A Community College Case Study, Nelly Cardinale Jun 2013

Examining The Transition To A Four-Day School Week And Investigating Post-Change Faculty/Staff Work-Life Balance: A Community College Case Study, Nelly Cardinale

Dr. Nelly Cardinale

This single descriptive embedded case study examined the process of implementing a four-day work/school week at a community college and investigated post-change faculty/staff work-life balance. All of the students attending this college live at home. The change was implemented due to state funding shortfalls, increasing college utility expenses and low employee morale. Additionally, this study resulted in a set of guidelines that can be used by change agents of similar colleges to implement this change. Moreover, the study describes the positive and negative aspects associated with the shorter work/school week. On a positive note, the schedule facilitates ...

Does It Matter Which Citation Tool Is Used To Compare The H-Index Of A Group Of Highly Cited Researchers?, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Hadi Farhadi, Hadi Salehi, Melor Md Yunus, Arezoo Aghaei Chadegani, Maryam Farhadi, Masood Fooladi Mar 2013

Does It Matter Which Citation Tool Is Used To Compare The H-Index Of A Group Of Highly Cited Researchers?, Nader Ale Ebrahim, Hadi Farhadi, Hadi Salehi, Melor Md Yunus, Arezoo Aghaei Chadegani, Maryam Farhadi, Masood Fooladi

Nader Ale Ebrahim

h-index retrieved by citation indexes (Scopus, Google scholar, and Web of Science) is used to measure the scientific performance and the research impact studies based on the number of publications and citations of a scientist. It also is easily available and may be used for performance measures of scientists, and for recruitment decisions. The aim of this study is to investigate the difference between the outputs and results from these three citation databases namely Scopus, Google Scholar, and Web of Science based upon the h-index of a group of highly cited researchers (Nobel Prize winner scientist). The purposive sampling method ...

The International Trafficking In Arms Regulations: Precluding Innovation In Academic Spacecraft Engineering — Or Are They?, Jeremy Straub, Joe Vacek Feb 2013

The International Trafficking In Arms Regulations: Precluding Innovation In Academic Spacecraft Engineering — Or Are They?, Jeremy Straub, Joe Vacek

Jeremy Straub

Government regulations and uncertainty about their enforcement can be a significant barrier to innovation. In business, it is undesirable to consume time and other resources developing a product that cannot be sold or which requires navigating significant bureaucracy for each sale. In academ-ia, where limited funding is available prior to the submission of a grant pro-posal and receipt of an award, proposal-stage compliance costs can derail a project long before it begins. This paper reviews the International Traffick-ing in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and their impact on spacecraft research in academia, private research labs and industry. It reviews the exemptions available ...

Discrimination In The Work Place On The Increase, Jamie Knop

Jamie Knop

As we all know, unemployment rates are on the increase at the moment. Conversely, what many of us don’t know is that when the economy is poor, claims for discrimination in the workplace subsequently increase.
