The Cost Conscious College Search, Linda Knicely
The Cost Conscious College Search, Linda Knicely
Ohio College Access Network
The Cost Conscious College Search (with the exception of the last couple of slides) is intended to be "audience ready" for students and families. Counselors or other school or community organization staff may adapt and use it to share eight practical strategies that may be employed effectively to lower the final total cost of a post-secondary education. We would welcome feedback about how users use it - with what audience, in what settings, with what delivery approach and any suggestions they might have for improvements. Besides sharing the information on the Power Point, we encourage you to include either experts …

Creating College And Career Ready School Climates: An Analogy Of Olympic Proportions!, Linda Knicely
Ohio College Access Network
Using the high interest level of the Olympics as a theme, this Power Point begins with uncaptioned photographs representing different sports and scenes from the Olympics. Audience members are asked to talk in small groups and then share out about different ways that scene might be related to college and career readiness. When sharing out is completed with the last slide, the slides are repeated a second time, this time on auto-timer and with a caption that tells a story. A third transition, brings up one of the slides (providing students with the equipment) to segue into a training exercise.

How Can We Nurture And Develop Creativity In First Year Design Students?, Kerry Meakin
Kerry Meakin
This research paper investigates the perceptions of first year third level design students in regards to their creative thinking and use of creative strategies, while studying a first year design based curriculum in an Institute of Technology in Dublin. The research aimed to question students in a three-phase, sequential project. The first phase, questioned twenty seven students by issuing anonymous questionnaires to gather data on their methods of incubating design ideas, if they experienced any levels of anxiety when doing so, and their satisfaction levels in their design and creative abilities. Literature was reviewed to discover the attributes of those …

Assessing The Strategic Credibility Of Special Collections, Erin Passehl, Rick A. Stoddart
Assessing The Strategic Credibility Of Special Collections, Erin Passehl, Rick A. Stoddart
Rick A Stoddart
In this time of often precarious funding at many colleges and universities, any case that can be made to illustrate how a department strategically fits into the overall university mission is not only worth merit, but an essential survival technique. This “strategic credibility” within the university is a vital form of currency in determining institution-wide resources prioritization, collaboration opportunities between organizational units, and overall direction of departments. This paper presents a case study of academic special collections in the Northwest and examines the methods these departments use to demonstrate value to the university. This paper considers how well do special …

Using random samples of 150 engineering master's theses and 150 doctoral dissertations from the ProQuest Dissertations and Theses database, the author conducted 30 Google searches of random seven word strings from the literature review sections for each thesis/dissertation, looking for textual matches to scholarly sources. The author then did a statistical comparison for significance between the thesis and dissertation data for the following measures: length of the longest verbatim string found for each thesis/dissertation, and the number of verbatim matches found for each thesis/dissertation. This study is designed to explore the following research question: Do engineering master's theses have more …

Transfer: Ohio Guarantees It
Ohio College Access Network
Transfer between state college/universities has changed drastically in the last ten years. The development of Transfer Assurance Guides (TAGs) and Career Transfer Assurance Guides (CTAGs), the “Acceptance of D” statewide policy, new policies on the acceptance of Advanced Placement Exams, and now the Electronic Transcript Clearinghouse has changed the face of transfer in Ohio in ways that will be far-reaching in effect and will change the way we all send and accept transfer credits in Ohio. In this presentation, Karen Dickerson, Professional Development Chair of the Ohio Transfer Council and Director of the Transfer Student Services Center at the University …
