This week we are featuring Dr. Jose Torres, the president of Aurora-based Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy. Torres was superintendent of Elgin Area School District U-46 from 2008 to 2014 and has served in various leadership roles, including regional superintendent/area instruction officer in Chicago Public Schools, and as the only superintendent on the Federal Equity and Excellence Commission of the United States Department of Education. Torres was one of three educators nationwide to receive the 2014 Dr. Effie H. Jones Humanitarian Award from the AASA, the school superintendents association.

This article offers a personal vision and conceptual design for reimagining specialized science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) academies designed to nurture decidedly different STEM minds and ignite a new generation of global STEM talent, innovation, and entrepreneurial leadership. The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) serves as a catalyst to improve teaching and learning in mathematics and science. This article describes IMSA initiatives that have statewide impact, including the IMSA Excellence 2000+ (E2K+) Program, which is designed to enrich mathematics and science exploration among middle school students. E2K+ addresses Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) learning standards and recommended National Science Foundation (NSF) Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) learning outcomes.

In response to significant recent changes in project organization and activities, this report traces key developments of the project over its ten-year history. The report concludes with a summary of accomplishments during the current 2002-03 academic year.
