In this paper, we report how we put a newly developed Twitter application to work in the context of a Knowledge Management course taught at the Singapore Management University (SMU) allowing students to post and view relevant tweets in an organized manner for the benefit of collaborative class discussions and learning. Graph theory is an area of mathematics often not encountered before college, and not always even there. Nonetheless, it is full of problems that novices can quickly understand and begin to figure out. Often, sixty seconds of introduction to such a problem can lead to literally an hour of discussion as students engage in finding solutions. In this presentation, I will offer some sample problems and discuss how to use them with students in middle or high school.

Undergraduate- and graduate-level physical chemistry classes are often so mathematically intensive that they often (a) dissuade qualified students from pursuing the field, (b) require more homework, testing, and grading time be devoted to tracking down hidden mathematical errors than is devoted to working with the subject matter, and (c) limit the complexity, and therefore real-world applicability, of assigned problems. In this talk, the integration of the general-purpose mathematical tool MathematicaTM throughout the second semester of undergraduate physical chemistry will be discussed. The Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse Attack has provided a compelling case for protecting civilian infrastructure against the effects of EMP. As with protecting infrastructure against any hazard, it will be important to take a risk-based priority approach for EMP, recognizing that it is fiscally impracticable to protect everything. A field and laboratory exercise for an undergraduate geomorphology class is described that focuses on the beach. The project requires one day of fieldwork and two laboratory sessions. In the field, students measure water surface fluctuations (waves) with a pressure sensor, survey beach profiles, collect sediment samples, and observe the beach state. In the laboratory, students wash and dry sediments, complete a grain size analysis, and determine sediment volumes. Students produce a report that includes analysis of wave data and beach profiles and a discussion of their findings.

We describe a framework for implementing computational thinking in a broad variety of general education courses. The framework is designed to be used by faculty without formal training in information technology in order to understand and integrate computational thinking into their own general education courses. The framework includes examples of computational thinking in a variety of general education courses, as well as sample in-class activities, assignments, and other assessments for the courses. Preparation of interfacial structures by molecular self-assembly has been actively studied for many years. Well-defined modified interfaces can be used to study fundamental interfacial properties, or they can be used in different practical applications. To broaden the utility of interfaces prepared by molecular self-assembly, monolayers containing terminal functionality are frequently used. These interfaces have structural and physical properties that can be controlled by both the identity of the functionalization as well as the ensemble structure of the modified interface. Procedures and programs for Web-based homework administration were developed and tested. The special feature of the protocol is the option of a "second chance". When a student gives a wrong answer in the weekly homework assignment, a second version of the same question is posed to that student within 48 hours. Both the original and the second versions of the homework are Web-based and automatically graded. More than 90% of the students used the second chance at least once during the semester. More than 60% used this feature for every homework assignment. The second-chance option motivates students to study the …
