Raising The Bar For Instructional Outcomes: Toward Transformative Learning Experiences, Brent Wilson, Patrick Parrish

Brent Wilson

Most instructional technologists understand that instruction aims to be effective, efficient, and appealing. These three quality indicators have proven useful in establishing desired outcomes. In this article the authors suggest an expanded set of indicators, with more attention to social impact, engagement, and the learner's experience. By broadening and deepening expectations, the authors hope to encourage more research on instruction, leading to powerful or transformative learning.

Despite the growing evidence of humanity’s impact on the natural world and the urgent need to shape citizens who understand the impact that their choices and actions have on their local and global environments, colleges and universities throughout the United States have been slow to add environmental education as a core component of their undergraduate curricula. Harnessing our shared interest in environment issues and the humanities, we designed and taught an experimental course in environmental literature for the honors program at Western Michigan University that we hope will become a template of what is possible in postsecondary environmental education. Critical Components Of Transforming Teaching And Leading: Recognizing Educational Success Professional Excellence, And Collaborative Teaching (Respect), Samuel Hinton Nov 2014

Critical Components Of Transforming Teaching And Leading: Recognizing Educational Success Professional Excellence, And Collaborative Teaching (Respect), Samuel Hinton

Samuel Hinton

The purpose of this commentary is to disseminate significant content and to trigger discussion on the seven components of “A Blueprint for R.E.S.P.E.C.T. RECOGNIZING EDUCATIONAL SUCCESS, PROFESSIONAL EXCELLENCE AND COLLABORATIVE TEACHING (2012).” Teacher preparation programs in the United States are moving in the direction of a clinical model. Some reasons for doing so are to facilitate teacher leadership and respect, earn higher professional recognition, acquire higher financial compensation, and embrace more collaborative teaching. This formula should lead to American students receiving an education that meets competitive global standards. Highly effective teachers accelerate student learning, close achievement gaps that have persisted …

Think Globally, Learn Locally: Multimedia Conferencing Between Two Schools Of Nursing, Carol Sternberger, Belinda Deal, Rebecca Fountain

Carol S Sternberger

Three nurse educators, who met at the American Nurses Association Nursing Care in Life, Death, and Disaster Conference, collaborated on a multimedia conferencing project to teach nursing students about disaster response. This case study examines two outcomes of this project. The project provided students in a disaster nursing course in Indiana an opportunity to meet faculty who helped establish and maintain a special needs shelter in Texas following hurricanes Katrina and Rita. It also demonstrated, through the use of technology, the ability of nurse faculty to share their expertise with colleagues and students residing in different geographical locations.

Observe, Experience And Integrate: Enhancing Professional Development Using International Study Tours, Li-Anne Woo, Titan Liu, Justin Craig, Timothy Kiessling

Li-Anne Woo

This chapter provides evidence of the positive benefits associated with adopting an international study tour as a unique and effective professional development tool. Specifically, we show how involvement in an international study tour has the potential to make a significant contribution to students' ability to lead, their understanding of how important it is to show initiative particularly in uncertain situations and to be an effective contributor to a team. We couch our conversation within Kolb's (1984) experiential learning frame and use Bloom's Taxonomy (Bloom et al., 1956) to illustrate how the study tour's learning objectives are assessed. Finally, we discuss …

The researchers framed this program evaluation project as an investigation of the influences on teaching practices of a teaching center program participants and non-participants. Changes in teaching practices and the motivations for these changes of fifteen randomly chosen faculty were studied. Session participants will develop and analyze brief case studies using abbreviated data sets and three of the methods that were used in the study. Through hands on analysis of data, session participants will enhance their ability to evaluate the conclusions drawn by the researchers and become familiar with useful analytical frameworks that they can use in their own research. …

Interpreting Children's Dreams Through Humanistic Sandtray Therapy, Karrie Swan, April Schottelkorb Jul 2013

Interpreting Children's Dreams Through Humanistic Sandtray Therapy, Karrie Swan, April Schottelkorb

Karrie L Swan

Children’s dreams often depict waking life events and experiences. Although dream work therapy for adults is fairly established, recommendations for processing children’s dreams appear fractional. Because of the distinct developmental needs of children, we postulated that sandtray therapy might assist children to express and discover enlarged meanings in dreams. In this article, we present the Sandtray for Interpreting Childhood Dreams (SICD) intervention for the purpose of potentially helping children gain insight into how their dreams may be related to past and present waking life experiences. An explanation and application of the model is presented, and the developmental rationale for using …

Business Sustainability And Undergraduate Management Education: An Australian Study, Josie Fisher, Ingrid Bonn Jan 2013

Business Sustainability And Undergraduate Management Education: An Australian Study, Josie Fisher, Ingrid Bonn

Ingrid Bonn

The academic literature arguing that there is an urgent requirement for businesses to become more sustainable is rapidly expanding. There is also a demonstrated need for managers to develop a better understanding of sustainability and the appropriate strategies required to improve business sustainability. In addition, there have been international calls for educators to address sustainability in their programs. The aim of this study was to investigate the extent to which business sustainability was incorporated into undergraduate business and management courses in Australian universities. The high percentage of international students enrolled in these courses suggests our findings have implications beyond the …

Many of our students are first generation and work full time. Our poster will illustrate the use of video presence to allow students to: virtually meet with faculty; participate in group projects from six locations; learn research strategies; develop better communication skills to become better speakers by using face-to-face interact ion. Students connect with alumni in the field sharing real-time work experiences. Significant savings have been realized across campus with online interviewing using this technology.

Perceived Parental Investment In School As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Socio-Economic Indicators And Educational Outcomes In Rural America, Kimberly L. Henry, Thomas M. Cavanagh, Eugene R. Oetting Aug 2011

Perceived Parental Investment In School As A Mediator Of The Relationship Between Socio-Economic Indicators And Educational Outcomes In Rural America, Kimberly L. Henry, Thomas M. Cavanagh, Eugene R. Oetting

Thomas M. Cavanagh

Each year, 1.3 million students fail to graduate, dropping the United States’ high school graduation rate to 69%. One of the most salient predictors of high school dropout is socio-economic status (SES), which makes important an improved understanding of the reasons why SES affects educational outcomes. In this study, multilevel mediation models were utilized to examine parental investment in school as a mediator of the relationship between SES and educational outcomes among an ethnically diverse sample of 64,350 7th to 9th grade students from 199 rural communities and towns in the U.S. (50% male, 63% non-Hispanic White). These relationships were …

The Emerging New Human Being, The Culture-In-The-Self, And Ahp's New Multidimensional Intercultural Initiative, Carroy U. Ferguson

Carroy U "Cuf" Ferguson, Ph.D.

The emerging New Human Being will need to explore and come to terms with a phenomenon, operating deeply, uniquely, and diversely at a core level of all human beings on the planet. I call this phenomenon the “culture-in-the-Self,” a term coined some years ago by cofounders of Interculture Inc. What we commonly think of as culture is just the surface of this phenomenon, often appearing outwardly in the diverse “forms” of cultural scripts, beliefs, values, behaviors, and customs). I want to call attention to what goes on beneath surface culture(s), and how AHP intends to play a primary role in …
