Given the importance of effective teacher evaluation to successful teaching and learning, it is surprising that many of the research findings in this area are being ignored. Discredited procedures continue to survive and are even born again within reinvented systems of bureaucratic and managerial control This paper argues for an approach to teacher evaluation that reflects the findings of contemporary research. It falls into three parts. The first part reviews the relevant literature and distills some features and principles that underpin successful policy and practice. This report describes the views of graduates from Australian universities on their experience of postgraduate research. It focuses specifically on graduates who completed their courses of study in 2000 but also references the previous cohort of postgraduate research students. The Post-Graduate Research Experience Questionnaire enables graduates to express their degree of agreement or disagreement on the following facets of their courses : quality of supervision; intellectual climate of the department in which the respondent was based; development of skills; quality of the infrastructure provided by the university; the thesis examination process; and the clarity of goals and expectations.

The Third International Mathematics and Science Study- Repeat 1998/1999 (TIMSS) assessed the mathematics and science achievement of students in their second year of high school. In addition to achievement tests, extensive information was collected from students and teachers. Of the 38 countries that took part, the overall results in mathematics of eleven countries, including Australia were not statistically different. Following the TIMSS research model, this article examines the association between three levels of curriculum, the intended curriculum, the implemented and the attained curriculum. This article presents a broad view of issues related to faculty diversity. Headings include Demographics, The Growth of Faculty Diversity as an Ideal, and Barriers in the Academic Workplace. Race, ethnicity, and gender are the most common characteristics that institutions observe in order to measure faculty diversity. An even broader approach to faculty diversity involves age, socioeconomic background, national origin, sexual orientation, and diverse learning styles and opinions. Until the latter part of the twentieth century, the professoriate in the western world was composed almost exclusively of privileged, heterosexual males of Caucasian descent. In 2000 IMSA and the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s Project 2061 established a partnership, IMSA 2061, to offer unique and nationally recognized professional development programs for mathematics and science teachers and education leaders. Participants in the IMSA 2061 professional development programs learn to use the tools, research, and experiences of education reform to enable all students to achieve the learning expressed in state and national standards. As the ABET process in each institution moves toward outcomes assessment, it pushes each program to develop and implement its outcome assessment plans. Assessment plans document how programs will gather data, interpret the findings, and use the results to make improvements in programs, curricula, and resources. The ABET team at North Carolina State University (faculty from each engineering discipline along with assessment-knowledgeable personnel) has developed a model that academic programs within the College of Engineering use to determine what data to gather, where to obtain the data, and what criteria may be most appropriate when interpreting the data. Encouraging the entry of women into science-related careers remains problematic in the UK and Australia. Although recent initiatives have resulted in increased participation of girls in science-related subjects in schools, there remains a significant gender divide in entry to scientific programmes of study at post-compulsory and university levels. In this study, datasets for 13-year-old pupils in Australia and England taken from the Third International Maths and Science Survey (TIMSS) were used to derive path models that identify factors influencing the extent to which science-related careers were viewed as desirable by Australian and English pupils. Students who are frequently absent from school ('non-attenders') are considered to be 'at risk'. State education departments have recently begun to improve their collection of student absence data, often to contribute to the development of performance standards for schools. This paper presents a summary of data from the Term 2 collection in South Australian government schools in 1997 and 1999. the data were combined with student information, which allowed examination and comparison of attendance patterns for different groups of students. A partir de una encuesta realizada a académicos en una universidad pública estatal, se midieron los niveles de satisfacción global y específica en el trabajo de los de tiempo completo que la contestaron. La satisfacción global en el trabajo fue alta, lo misma que la relativa a la docencia y autonomía individual. In their chapter on numeracy, the authors begin by exploring the many terms used to describe the learning of mathematics by adults. They discuss the relationship between the terms "mathematics" and "numeracy" and explain why numeracy--making meaning with numbers and mathematical processes--is the term they chose for their overview. Moving on to examine adult numeracy education in the U.S, the authors find that little attention is paid to the development of math skills among adults in Adult Basic Education (ABE) research but that adult numeracy education is prominent in practice.
