Autobiographies In Preservice Teacher Education: A Snapshot Tool For Building A Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, Annmarie Gunn, Susan Bennett, Linda Evans, Barbara Peterson, James Welsh

Linda S. Evans

Many scholars have made the call for teacher educators to provide experiences that can lead preservice teachers to embrace a culturally responsive pedagogy. We investigated the use of brief autobiographies during an internship as a tool (a) for preservice teachers to examine their multidimensional culture; and (b) for teacher educators to assess preservice teachers' developing understandings about cultural responsive pedagogy and then further design curriculum to enhance these understandings. Using qualitative methods, we analyzed the preservice teachers' (N=24) autobiographies and an interview with the professor of this course. Based on the findings of this study, we suggest teacher educators ...

It’S Not Just The Language: Culture As An Essential Element In Pre-Service Teacher Education, Linda Evans, Annmarie Gunn

Linda S. Evans

We’re not even two weeks into this course, and already I feel that the readings are speaking directly to me: to my prejudice, my (unadmitted) racism, my unresolved feelings about foreigners in my country, and all of the sentiments I hold dear about what it means to be American, and what those who are not native to this country “should” be doing to fit in. I am one of those people who have thought, if not actually said, that once they are in the United States, they need to speak English. So, now, I am ashamed that I have ...

Mainstream First-Grade Teachers' Understanding Of Strategies For Accommodating The Needs Of English Language Learners, Clare Hite, Linda Evans

Linda S. Evans

In this time of high stakes testing, teachers' working with English Language Learners (ELLs) becomes a high-stakes teaching act. Nationally, mandated testing is increasing in the schools even as school demographics are changing. The growing numbers of language-minority students come with varying levels of English proficiency, from little or none to fluent bilingualism. Teachers find it difficult to bring all their native-English-speaking children along to an acceptable level of performance in literacy and content-area subjects; ELLs present an even greater challenge, particularly for the elementary mainstream classroom teachers who are the primary language teachers for most young ELLs, yet typically ...

The Acquisition Of Literacy In A Non-Native Language By Two Hispanic First Graders In A Mainstream Classroom. Dissertation, Linda Evans

Linda S. Evans

The purpose of the study was to provide an in-depth view or the processes employed by two Hispanic first-grade children for the simultaneous development of English language and English literacy skills in a mainstream classroom. As a qualitative case study utilizing naturalistic inquiry with an emergent design, the study included detailed observations of the school, school personnel, classroom environment, instruction, and the two students.

The major guiding question follows: How do first grade students who are limited in their English proficiency experience the dual processes of acquiring the English language and acquiring English literacy in a mainstream classroom?
