Verbal protest due to work being perceived as challenging and unexpected schedule changes was identified as a problem for a student in an Autistic Support classroom. Baseline data was taken on the number of instances of verbal protest observed throughout the school day. Research studies were examined to determine a variety of behavioral approaches that have been used and the effectiveness of self-monitoring tools in decreasing behaviors. A self-monitoring tool called a Self and Match was chosen to be implemented during the intervention period. This paper will report on the positive changes seen in a struggling reader when a Read Aloud case study was conducted over a 4 week period. Key factors to the Read Aloud including offering choice in what was read, structuring each session to allow for consistency and gathering data through a pre-case study survey, post-case study survey, post-session surveys, observations and comparisons of Language Arts homework before and during the Read Aloud case study.
