Conversion of Midwestern riparian areas for agricultural production has greatly altered their function and suitability for birds and other wildlife. Recently, however, restoration of riparian functions has been a major focus of land management agencies in the Midwest. We used historic land-use data to describe land-cover changes since European settlement and the subsequent effects of habitat restoration efforts on the landscape along a section of the Iowa River in east-central Iowa. We then used bird-density data collected in a subset of the study area in 2001 and 2002 to estimate changes in breeding bird populations of the entire study area …

Winter Bird Use Of Conservation Reserve Program Fields Harvested For Biomass, Les D. Murray, Louis B. Best

As Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) contracts expire, many fields may be returned to agricultural production. Growing switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) as a biomass fuel is an alternative to returning fields to rowcrops. CRP fields provide winter cover for birds, but the harvest of biomass would remove most of the cover and affect bird use of the fields. We estimated winter bird abundances in nonharvested, total-harvested, and partially (strip) harvested switchgrass fields in southern Iowa. Song sparrows (Melospiza melodia) were observed only in strip-harvested fields and ring-necked pheasants (Phasianus colchicus) were observed only in nonharvested fields and uncut areas of strip-harvested fields. …

Artists' Depictions Of Catsteps In The Loess Hills Of Iowa: Evidence For Mid-Nineteenth Century Climate Change, Kimberly R. Dillon, Steven H. Emerman, Pamela K. Wilcox

Catsteps are the staircase-like features common on hillslopes of the Loess Hills of western Iowa. The record of artistic depictions of the Loess Hills was examined to determine when catsteps appeared. George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, and John James Audubon traveled up the Missouri River m 1832, 1833 and 1843, respectively, and between them, produced 31 works of art depicting either the Loess Hills or the loess bluffs on the Nebraska side of the river. Only three works by Bodmer of Blackbird Hill on the Nebraska side possibly show catsteps. The Assistant State Geologist, Orestes St. John, produced six sketches of …

Silicification Of Corals, Stromatoporids, And Brachiopods At The Weathered Surface Within The Devonian-Age Little Cedar Formation (Solon And Rapid Members) In Eastern Iowa, Adam L. Majeski, Paul L. Garvin

Diagenesis of fossils contained in middle-Devonian limestones was studied at the Troy Mills and Robins quarries in Linn County, Iowa and at the Four County and Ernst quarries in Johnson County, Iowa. Fossils located at weathered bedrock surfaces were preferentially silicified, and the silicification affected corals, stromatoporids and, to a limited extent, brachiopods, but not other fossils or the host rock. The siliceous horizon extends no more than a few centimeters below the weathered surfaces, suggesting that silicification was constrained by them. Silica for silicification might have come from a variety of sources, including sponge spicules or radiolarian tests, insoluble …

This paper is a further reflection on two conference papers presented at the World Conference for Continuing Engineering Education (WCCEE) in Vienna in April 2006 and National University of Ireland (NUI) Galway Conference: The Challenge of Diversity: Teaching, Support and Student Learning , June 2006. Both conference papers dealt with different aspects of my experiences of the theoretical and pedagogical changes required in re-design and delivery of a part-time engineering programme for the continuing education development of electrical engineers in the workforce.

In addition to clarifying its mission and strategic directions, the Byrd School clearly articulated its vision: to become recognized as a provider of individualized business education driven by entrepreneurial thinking, global understanding, and ethical practice. The development of the Institute for Entrepreneurship described in this article is a critical step in actualizing this vision.

We argue that in order to help forward John Dewey’s vision of a pragmatist educational metaphysic, civic engagement through service learning in the basic media studies communication course is a possible plan of action. Specifically, we focus on basic media studies communication courses (e.g., introduction to media criticism, media and society, media and culture) and discuss ways to implement civic-oriented service learning activities for the purposes of fostering greater civic engagement. Increasing Fluency In Disabled Middle School Readers: Repeated Reading Utilizing Above Grade Level Reading Passages, David D. Paige

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study examined the effects of repeated reading using above grade level narrative passages on: (a) reading rate as measured in words per minute (wpm) and (b) reading miscues. A single group, pretest-post-test design was used to measure the treatment effects. The study group consisted of 11, sixth grade African-American students with learning disabilities who received language arts instruction in a self-contained special education setting. A pretest- post-test measurement was conducted using the Flynt-Cooter Reading Inventory for the Classroom to measure reading level and reading rate. Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This manuscript documents a year-long descriptive case study of preservice teachers specializing in reading. The objectives of this study were to (a) better understand the development of literacy beliefs and change processes in preservice teachers with reading specializations engaged in the final year of their field-based teacher education program, and (b) ascertain factors influencing their change processes during the final year of preparation. The results highlight the shifts these preservice teachers made concerning their beliefs about literacy instruction and the factors that served as catalysts for those changes.

This paper reviews the effects of a program of professional development for literacy teachers in an urban, southeastern elementary school. During academic year 2002-2003, only 67% of fourth grade students met or exceeded state standards for achievement in reading as measured by the Criterion Referenced Competency Test (CRCT), and only 77% of fourth grade students met or exceeded state standards for achievement in English/language arts as measured by the CRCT (Georgia Department of Education, 2005).

There is considerable diversity among gifted programs and program availability in the United States. This is at least in part due to the fact that there is no national mandate for gifted programming, despite the existence of the Javitts Act. According to Dewey (1916/1944), having interactions with other groups helps in the process of democratic growth because one is better able to understand other perspectives. Eating Disorders have become an increasing reality among today’s youth. According to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, “approximately one out of every 100 adolescent girls develops anorexia.. .another two to five out of every 100 young women develop bulimia nervosa” (Understanding Disordered Eating and Eating Disorders, 2005, p. 6). Although eating disorders are usually seen as affecting girls, studies have shown that hundreds of thousands of boys experience eating disorders as well (Boys and Eating Disorders, 2004). การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่อศึกษา กระบวนการและผลของการพัฒนาหลักสูตร รวมทั้งปัจจัยที่ส่งผลต่อความสำเร็จในการพัฒนา หลักสูตรสถานศึกษาของโรงเรียนนำร่องจำนวน ๖ โรง โดยใช้การวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพในลักษณะ การวิจัยพหุกรณีศึกษาหลายพื้นที่ (Multisite studies) ผู้วิจัยใช้ระยะเวลาอยู่ในสนามนาน ๔ เดือน เก็บรวบรวมข้อมูลโดยการสังเกตแบบมีส่วนร่วมและไม่มีส่วนร่วม สัมภาษณ์แบบไม่เป็น ทางการและแบบเจาะลึก และการวิเคราะห์ เอกสาร การวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลใช้การวิเคราะห์แบบ อุปนัย จำแนกชนิดของข้อมูล และเปรียบเทียบ ข้อมูลโดยใช้โปรแกรมการวิเคราะห์ข้อมูลเชิง คุณภาพ ATLAS.ti และนำเสนอข้อมูลโดยการพรรณนา ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ๑. กระบวนการพัฒนาหลักสูตรสถานศึกษามี ๓ ขั้นตอน คือ ๑) การเตรียมความพร้อม ๒) การจัดทําสาระหลักสูตร และ ๓) การนำหลักสูตรไปใช้ จากการศึกษา พบว่า โรงเรียน นำร่องทุกโรงมีกระบวนการพัฒนาหลักสูตรสถาน ศึกษาทั้ง ๓ ขั้นตอนคล้ายคลึงกันในภาพรวม แต่ มีความแตกต่างกันในตัวแปรพื้นที่และขนาด เมื่อพิจารณาในแต่ละขั้นตอน พบว่า โรงเรียนที่ตั้งอยู่ในพื้นที่ต่างกันมีการจัดทำหลักสูตรท้องถิ่น ต่างกัน และโรงเรียนที่มีขนาดต่างกันมีกิจกรรม ในการพัฒนาหลักสูตรในแต่ละขั้นตอนที่แตก ต่างกันซึ่งได้แก่ ขั้นตอนที่ ในกิจกรรมการ พัฒนาบุคลากร ขั้นตอนที่ ๒ กิจกรรมการขยาย ผลการจัดทําหลักสูตร และขั้นตอนที่ ๓ การบูรณา การการเรียนรู้ การจัดสื่อการเรียนรู้ และการนิเทศ กำกับ ติดตาม ๒. ผลของการพัฒนาหลักสูตรสถานศึกษา การพัฒนาหลักสูตรสถานศึกษาส่งผลต่อผู้เรียน และผู้สอน ดังนี้ ด้านผู้เรียน พบว่า ผู้เรียนทุก โรงเรียนมีทักษะกระบวนการ ได้แก่ มีการทํางาน เป็นทีม มีการค้นคว้าจากแหล่งเรียนรู้ท้องถิ่น และมีคุณลักษณะอันพึงประสงค์ ได้แก่ ผู้เรียนมี ความสุขในการเรียนและกล้าแสดงออกมากขึ้น ส่วนด้านครูผู้สอน พบว่า ครูทุกโรงเรียนมีความรู้ ในการพัฒนาหลักสูตร มีพฤติกรรมการทำงาน และมีการพัฒนาตนเองดีขึ้น เมื่อพิจารณาตาม ขนาด พบว่า การพัฒนาหลักสูตรในโรงเรียนที่มี ขนาดต่างกันทําให้ผู้เรียนมีการใช้อินเตอร์เน็ต เป็นเครื่องมือในการสืบค้น …

การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์หลักเพื่อเปรียบ เทียบคุณภาพของแบบสอบในด้านความตรงตามสภาพ อำนาจจำแนก ความยาก ฟังก์ชัน สารสนเทศของข้อสอบ ฟังก์ชันสารสนเทศของ แบบสอบ และอัตราส่วนสารสนเทศเฉลี่ย ทำการ ศึกษาโดยใช้ทฤษฎีการตอบสนองข้อสอบระหว่าง แบบสอบเลือกตอบที่มีจํานวนตัวถูกตัวเดียวกับ ตัวถูกมากกว่า ๑ ตัว และใช้วิธีการตรวจให้ คะแนนความรู้บางส่วนตามวิธีการตรวจให้ คะแนนแบบเลือกชุดตัวถูกและแบบตัดตัวลวง กลุ่มตัวอย่างที่ใช้ในการวิจัย ได้แก่ นิสิตคณะ ครุศาสตร์ จุฬาลงกรณ์มหาวิทยาลัย ชั้นปีที่ ที่ลงทะเบียนเรียน วิชาการวัดและประเมินผล ทางการศึกษา ในภาคการศึกษาต้น ปีการศึกษา ๒๕๔๖ จํานวน ๒๒๓ คน เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการ วิจัยครั้งนี้ ประกอบด้วยแบบสอบเลือกตอบคู่ขนานสำหรับวัดผลสัมฤทธิ์ทางการเรียน วิชา การวัดและประเมินผลทางการศึกษา จำนวน ๔ ฉบับ ฉบับละ ๒๕ ข้อ เป็นแบบสอบที่มีจำนวนตัว ถูกตัวเดียว ๒ ฉบับและจํานวนตัวถูกมากกว่า ๑ ตัว ๒ ฉบับ มีวิธีการตรวจให้คะแนน ๒ วิธี ดังกล่าว เก็บข้อมูลโดยให้นิสิตทําแบบสอบวัด ๒ ครั้งโดยสุ่มเป็น กลุ่ม ครั้งแรก สุ่มนิสิตให้ ทําแบบสอบ ๒ ฉบับ ส่วนครั้งที่สอง สุ่มนิสิตให้ทำแบบสอบ ที่เหลืออีก ๒ ฉบับ ที่ไม่ซ้ำจากครั้ง แรก แต่ละครั้งห่างกัน ๒ สัปดาห์ วิเคราะห์ ข้อมูลโดยใช้โปรแกรม SPSS และ PARSCALE for WINDOWS ผลการวิจัยสรุปได้ดังนี้ ๑) การเปรียบเทียบ ความตรงตามสภาพระหว่างแบบสอบคู่ขนานทั้ง ๔ ฉบับที่มีจํานวนตัวถูกและวิธีการตรวจให้ คะแนนต่างกันมีค่าความตรงตามสภาพไม่แตก ต่างกันอย่างมีนัยสำคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ ๐.๐๑ ๒) การเปรียบเทียบค่าอำนาจจำแนก พบว่า ค่าเฉลี่ยของค่าอำนาจจำแนกของแบบสอบ คู่ขนาน ๔ ฉบับ มีความแตกต่างกันอย่างมีนัย สําคัญทางสถิติที่ระดับ …
