Interprofessional practice (IPP) among health professionals is even more important when working with individuals exposed to trauma, which can result in disrupted physical, cognitive, and social development, and manifest in an array of physical and psychological symptoms (e.g. Felitti & Anda, 1998). Greetings to all as we embark upon the last weeks of 2017! This fall has been a busy time for JCIPE in many different ways. At the end of September, thirteen JCIPE staff, faculty and students attended the Collaborative Practice conference held in Banff, Alberta, Canada. JCIPE delivered one invited pre-conference workshop and five peer-reviewed, accepted live presentations focusing on a wide range of our activities including Hotspotting, the Health Mentors Program, the Jefferson Teamwork Observation Guide (JTOG) and programmatic sustainability. JCIPE, founded in 2007, was commended by the accreditation committee for its work during the committee’s most recent visit to Philadelphia in June 2014.

Lewis and Clark Community College (L&C) has initiated an innovative interprofessional collaborative practice (IPCP) model at its Family Health Clinic (FHC), a nurse managed center, located at the main campus in Godfrey, Illinois. The FHC previously operated successfully for seven years, and has exceeded the projected impact with the numbers of individuals served in the community. The project is innovative and distinctive in providing an IPCP model in that it is inter-institutional, with several of the participating practitioners from institutions other than L&C. I attended the IPE Grand Rounds hosted by Jefferson Students for Interprofessional Education (JSIPE) with the Palliative Care Team. There were several different health care professionals present on the panel that explained their specific and individualized roles within the Palliative Care team, as well how these roles united to help them function best as a group. The panel demonstrated these specific roles with a case presentation that also helped illustrate some of the conflicts they face on a daily basis, and how they overcome these conflicts to best serve their patients.

In October 2014 I participated in a TeamSTEPPS® interprofessional (IP) learning activity that has already positively affected my performance in my first clinical field-work rotation. An IP team of professors from the nursing, occupational therapy, medicine, and pharmacy programs hosted the learning activity. Potential difficulty of cross-disciplinary interaction was noted from the beginning as students from each discipline sat in groups despite encouragement to split up. However, with direction from the professors, we formed small interdisciplinary groups and participated in a teamwork-focused icebreaker followed by a lecture about the origins and techniques of the TeamSTEPPS® system. It is well established that there is a need for Interprofessional Education (IPE) in the current landscape of health education1 and students that participate in IPE enjoy these experiences and develop skills in interprofessional teamwork that prepare them for future team-based practice.2,3,4 IPE, however, is not standardized. Healthcare providers may not be prepared to incorporate cultural and spiritual aspects of patient care within their practice. The cultural and spiritual toolbox project will increase the opportunity for those working in a local three campus hospital system to deliver patient-centered care at the bedside by helping them recognize the nuances of various cultures and religions. An interprofessional team convened over a one year period to explore how these aspects of care could be met.

In the Fall 2014 edition of the Interprofessional Education and Care Newsletter, we presented several innovative IPE projects from students, faculty and our colleagues overseas. The articles in this edition build on that progress, high-lighting our efforts, redefined during a January 2015 Jefferson IPE retreat facilitated by Dr. Malcolm Cox, to more closely link IPE and clinical practice. The critical need for students to learn to be effective members of interprofessional teams in preparation for collaborative practice-ready care provision now and in the future has been well documented1. There are increasing opportunities for students to observe interprofessional events to assist them in doing so, but often their role is passive and the teams may not demonstrate the highest level of patient-centered care, minimizing the student learning.

A recent review of pre-qualifying interprofessional education in the UK reported the practical challenges of synchronising interprofessional education1. Whilst it was noted that online interprofessional courses were developed primarily to overcome timetabling conflicts of students and clinicians from various health professions, it was recognised that a blended learning approach with appropriate student support could enable an effective interprofessional education experience with lower running costs and reduced disruption. It was found, however, that despite the ubiquity of e-learning in interprofessional education there seemed to be less sharing than expected1.

Collaborative Healthcare: Interprofessional Practice, Education and Evaluation (JCIPE)

Earlier this year, members of the medical intensive care unit (MICU) attended an interprofessional workshop that utilized Awakening/Breathing/Choice of Sedation/Delirium/Early Mobility (ABCDE) bundle simulation combined with TeamSTEPPS training to empower care givers to advocate for patient safety while optimizing patient care. The ABCDE bundle is an evidence-based tool designed to implement pain, agitation, and delirium guideline recommendations into routine practice. To further improve patient safety and outcomes and build upon the ABCDE concept, the MICU team developed an interprofession-al practice project by adding routine assessment of need for indwelling Foley catheters to their daily work list, creating the “ABCDEF” bundle.

In a recent survey conducted by EDUCAUSE Center for Analysis and Research on undergraduates and technology, 31% of students reported owning tablet technology a 15% increase from the previous year and 76% of students reported owning smart phones. This finding was a 14% increase from the previous year.
