The Power Of Kindness And Positivity In The College Environment, Kayla M. Vasilko, Joseph T. Stewart
The Power Of Kindness And Positivity In The College Environment, Kayla M. Vasilko, Joseph T. Stewart
Purdue Journal of Service-Learning and International Engagement
Research has shown that positivity in school climates has a direct connection to academic success. Building high self-esteem and recognizing the value of kindness in terms of emotional learning are key factors for schools to prioritize when aiming to help students succeed (Gadermann & Reichil, 2016). Additionally, it has been shown that kindness and positivity naturally trigger upward spirals of improvement, and have been noted to promote better social interactions, relationships, and health. Positive emotions, such as happiness, also broaden thought-action repertoires, which in turn builds intellectual, physical, social, and psychological factors in all of us (Otake, 2006; Bhujade, 2017). …
Using Analytics To Transform A Problem-Based Case Library: An Educational Design Research Approach, Matthew Schmidt, Andrew A. Tawfik
Using Analytics To Transform A Problem-Based Case Library: An Educational Design Research Approach, Matthew Schmidt, Andrew A. Tawfik

This article describes the iterative design, development, and evaluation of a case-based learning environment focusing on an ill-structured sales management problem. We discuss our processes and situate them within the broader framework of educational design research. The learning environment evolved over the course of three design phases. A semisummative evaluation of student concept maps after the third phase revealed unsatisfactory learning outcomes. This paper focuses on how we investigated design flaws that contributed to poor learning performance. A specific focus of our investigation was the use of Google Analytics data, which uncovered weaknesses in our design. Based on our findings, …
Design And Evaluation Of A Problem-Based Learning Environment For Teacher Training, Laura Hemker, Claudia Prescher, Susanne Narciss
Design And Evaluation Of A Problem-Based Learning Environment For Teacher Training, Laura Hemker, Claudia Prescher, Susanne Narciss
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Problem-based learning can have a great impact on the acquisition of practical knowledge, which is a central learning aim in the field of teacher education. Therefore, we implemented a problem-based learning approach in four seminars on educational assessment. In this paper, we outline our didactic design and discuss the results of the first evaluations, which explored acceptance of the approach, learning results, and expected applicability of the acquired knowledge.
The results show benefits of the problem-based learning approach, but also room for improvement. Specifically, the use of problems from multiple contexts (theoretical foundations and direct practical application) and the flexible …

This study investigates the ways in which medical students’ achievement goal orientations (AGO) affect their perceptions of learning and actual learning from an online problem-based learning environment, Calibrated Peer ReviewTM. First, the tenability of a four-factor model (Elliot & McGregor, 2001) of AGO was tested with data collected from medical students (N = 137). Then, a structural regression model relating the factors of AGO to students’ perceptions of grading fairness, judgments of learning, and scoring accuracy was tested. The results indicate that student engagement and success in diagnosing a patient’s presentation using a peer feedback-rich web-based PBL environment …
High And Low Computer Self-Efficacy Groups And Their Learning Behavior From Self-Regulated Learning Perspective While Engaged In Interactive Learning Modules, Harry B. Santoso, Oenardi Lawanto, Kurt Becker, Ning Fang, Edward M. Reeve
High And Low Computer Self-Efficacy Groups And Their Learning Behavior From Self-Regulated Learning Perspective While Engaged In Interactive Learning Modules, Harry B. Santoso, Oenardi Lawanto, Kurt Becker, Ning Fang, Edward M. Reeve
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
The purpose of this research was to investigate high school students’ computer self-efficacy (CSE) and learning behavior in a selfregulated learning (SRL) framework while utilizing an interactive learning module. The researcher hypothesizes that CSE is reflected on cognitive actions and metacognitive strategies while the students are engaged with interactive learning modules. Two research questions guided this research: (1) how is students’ CSE while engaged in interactive learning modules? and (2) how do high and low CSE groups plan and monitor their cognitive action, and regulate their monitoring strategies based on their CSE level? The research used a mixedmethods approach to …

Using Pbl To Prepare Educators And Emergency Managers To Plan For Severe Weather, Sarah L. Stalker, Theresa Cullen, Kevin Kloesel
Using Pbl To Prepare Educators And Emergency Managers To Plan For Severe Weather, Sarah L. Stalker, Theresa Cullen, Kevin Kloesel
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Within the past 10 years severe weather has been responsible for an annual average of 278 fatalities in the United States (National Weather Service, 2013). During severe weather special populations are populations of high concentrations of people that cannot respond quickly. Schools show both of these characteristics. The average lead time for tornadoes is only 11 minutes (Simmons & Sutter, 2008), so decisions must be made decisively and leaders must be prepared in advance. This paper describes how an instructional design process was used to develop an interdisciplinary problem based learning training for both school personnel and emergency managers. In …

Supporting Student Self-Regulated Learning In Problem- And Project-Based Learning, Mary C. English, Anastasia Kitsantas
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
In order to be successful in problem- or project-based learning (PBL), students must take responsibility for the learning process by setting goals, monitoring, reflecting, and sustaining their motivation from the beginning of the project until the end. However, for many students, these processes do not occur naturally or easily. Therefore, the learning environment and teaching practices in PBL must be designed with intention to support students’ self-regulated learning (SRL). This paper describes specific learning environment features and teaching practices that have been shown to foster student responsibility for learning in each phase of PBL, with the purpose of providing educators …

Promoting Positive Academic Dispositions Using A Web-Based Pbl Environment: The Globaled 2 Project, Scott W. Brown, Kimberly A. Lawless, Mark A. Boyer
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
Problem-based learning (PBL) is an instructional design approach for promoting student learning, understanding and knowledge development in context rich settings. Previous PBL research has primarily focused on face-to-face learning environments, but current technologies afford PBL designers the opportunities to create online, virtual, PBL environments. The GlobalEd 2 Project is an example of a PBL environment that combines the positive characteristics of both face-to-face and online environments in a 14-week simulation of international negotiations of science advisors on global water resource issues. The GlobalEd 2 PBL environment is described examining the impact it has had on middle school students’ interest in …
