Abstract: This informative and interactive teaching symposium posits the Positive Peer Leadership Mentoring Program (PPLM) as an evidence-based wrap-around service for youth and families in Miami-Dade who are involved in the school-to-prison pipeline. Presenters first provide information to initiate the dialogic process of discerning and interpreting the school-to-prison pipeline, impacted by costs of incarceration for Black youth and families and the move toward effective mental health services in the juvenile justice system. The purpose of this study was to describe the personal and professional beliefs of teachers who were successful with providing literacy instruction to elementary school African American males in a Title I elementary school. This study examined the literacy practices of teachers and their beliefs about African American males. It also investigated their use of culturally relevant teaching practices. It was hypothesized that by exploring the beliefs and practices of successful teachers with African American males, this research could provide evidence of effective strategies, which could be used to impact the literacy achievement of African American males. This study sought to examine the outcome of teacher education candidates’ performance on a state content exam. Seventeen participants from the class of 2012 were identified for the study of which 12 participants fully participated in the study. This study utilized data collected from the participants through the Teacher Quality Enhancement Subcontract Grant Summer/Fall/Spring 2011-2012 Workshop Series held at the private HBCU. The research design used a QUAN- QUAL-QUAN to triangulate the data through three methods of data collection: GACE early childhood education (ECE) data, GACE ECE survey questionnaire and class of 2012 member interviews. With the adoption of anti-bullying laws and policies, it may seem that things are looking up for lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer or questioning (LGBTQQ) youth. We might assume that these laws and policies would better protect them from insults, harassment and violence at the hands of their peers and teachers. In fact, this is sometimes the case. But it is also the case that the insults become more covert, more implicit. This presentation will discuss results from a professional development initiative designed to equip primary and elementary grade educators with information and research-based practices to expand teachers’ repertoire of literacy instructional strategies and deepen their math content knowledge through a flipped classroom model. The presentation will define and describe the flipped learning model, briefly note its historical foundations, and address common misconceptions. As an academic librarian at Manhattan College, Riverdale, New York, I collaborate with teaching faculty and academic support centers on campus to provide holistic support to students. In the last year a cross collegial group including teaching faculty, library faculty and Instructional Designers has been created to explore ways in which to provide a “flexible structure” in curriculum across disciplines (e.g., Arts, Science, Engineering, Education, Information Literacy, etc.). This article seeks to provide a review of research literature published between 2008 and 2014 that discusses conflicts arising within the online education process, and their resolution within the online context. The goal of this article is to establish a current overview of related literature that can become the foundation of future studies in this field. Writing has been specifically identified as a neglected skill within the core academic areas for elementary aged students (National Commission on Writing, 2013). Therefore, there is a need for researchers to focus on interventions that will improve students’ writing skills. Unfortunately, limited research exists with regards to interventions that have proven to increase academic productivity in the area of writing. Doing history can be research, writing papers, working on a manuscript, putting final touches on a thesis, setting up a museum exhibit, being a tour guide, or teaching. We examine two programs that have developed out of USG STEM Initiative projects. With the first STEM Initiative, Columbus State University initiated an Academy of Future Teachers that has led to an expanded STEM Honors Camp for recruiting university students into high school teaching and heightening high school students’ interests in STEM careers. With STEM Initiative II, Columbus State launched a Project FOCUS replication that contributed to the establishment of the UTeach Columbus program for preparing high school STEM teachers.

In this presentation we will share outcomes from the Real STEM project, which provides professional development for rural teachers in the Georgia Coastal Plains supporting implementation of interdisciplinary STEM courses as well as STEM modules in mathematics and science courses. Why is the West left out of the Reconsruction unit? There are good reasons to include it. During the Civil War, the West was organized for statehood. The "Indian Question" became the "Indian Problem." Beginning with the First Ft. Laramie Treaty of 1851 and accelerating after Red Cloud's War in 1868, the "unceded" area of the northern plains previously set aside for traditional tribal life was replaced by new policies of well-meaning but forcible capitulation and assimilation. This session is a nuts and bolts overview on how Native-Americans are portrayed in Hollywood, advertising and mascots on sports teams. Resources packets with primary sources and reading selections will be provided to all attendees as well as strategies to address the issues of cultural contributions, ethics, stereotypes and prejudice. Handouts will also include tribes indigenous to Illinois and how to incorporate into the Common Core Standards. There will be a free raffle of Native-American resource materials for teachers for their classroom use.

Quantum mechanics is a part of modern life, playing a major role in chemistry, computing, nanotechnology, cryptography, and even biology. Many students are fascinated by the principles of quantum mechanics - and wave-particle duality is now in the Next Generation Science Standards. This course will present a basic introduction to quantum mechanics, accessible to middle or high school students, that will give students a taste of how strange and wonderful the universe really is (while also meeting the new standard). Teachers will be given slides and materials so they can teach the lesson themselves.

Teachers will model earthquakes using both technology and hands-on inquiry activities. Teachers will have a chance to engineer an “earthquake proof” building and use the engineering process to test and redesign their buildings before being tested on a shake table. This presentation will focus on the Statistics and Probability Domain of the Common Core Mathematics Content Standards for grades 6 – 8. Discussion of the language of the standards and how this language translates into learning activities for students will be explored. Session participants will be coached on three inquiry-based lessons utilizing interdisciplinary topics for data collection. Additional take-home lessons will be provided as well at each grade level. Connections to the Math Practice Standards, ELA Standards for Science and Technical Subjects, and Next Generation Science Practice Standards will also be investigated.

Problem-based learning (PBL) engages students in deep understanding through relevant, authentic problems. As students progress through the PBL process, they develop 21st Century knowledge, skills and dispositions in self-directed learning, critical thinking, problem-solving, innovative thinking, and collaboration while also meeting the 8 Mathematical Practices and 7 ELA College and Career Readiness descriptions from the Common Core Standards and the 8 Science and Engineering Practices from the NRC Framework for K-12 Science Education. In this presentation, we will introduce participants to PBL and discuss how the PBL process integrates Common Core Standards and the Science and Engineering Practices in classroom instruction.

Dr. Keating will bring Chicago history to life as she discusses her latest book “Rising up from Indian Country: The Battle of Fort Dearborn and the Birth of Chicago,” which was released last August to coincide with the bicentennial of the Battle of Fort Dearborn. She recounts the Battle of Fort Dearborn while situating it within the context of several wider histories that span the decades between the 1795 Treaty of Greenville, in which Native Americans gave up a square mile at the mouth of the Chicago River, and the 1833 Treaty of Chicago.
