This discussion paper describes the review and development of a standardised moderation of assessment process in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. This initiative was the result of collaboration between two nursing course coordinators and a Centre for Learning and Development academic who provided the scholarship of moderation of assessments. A review of the current moderation processes revealed the potential for variation amongst markers especially due to the large number of new and sessional academic staff. A recommendation from the review was the need for a moderation process that provides evidence for reporting and is not difficult for academic staff …

The advent of Massive Open Online Courses has been variously described as heralding the end of the modern university or alternatively, an over-hyped re-badging of existing online content whose advantages have already been realised. Appeals to ideology however, have typically characterised coverage of both polarities rather than hard evidence; in particular, there has been much less analysis on just how learning outcomes are impacted by either “face-to-face” interaction or online/digital environment. Mobile devices now allow us to capture a students learning in situ. Although the iPad is largely used in education, its use is often as a supportive tool and not on endemic to assessment. Digitisation of assessment holds the promise of reducing the assessment load to two-thirds of the current administrative workload. The process transforms to a co-creative learning experience negotiated between the teacher, student and parent.

The Community College Consortium for Open Educational Resources (CCCOER) is a community of practice focused on awareness and promoting best practices for OER discovery and adoption including open textbooks, open MOOCs, and open repositories to enhance learning and teaching. Blended Learning in the Liberal Arts Conference
Motivated by my experience as a student in a MOOC, I have incorporated online peer review of writing assignments into my advanced undergraduate biochemistry courses. Each student submits her review of a course reading or report online, then evaluates work submitted by two or three of her classmates based on a rubric I provide. As peer reviewers, students anonymously assign low-stakes grades and receive credit for their reviews, but they also get an opportunity to write for each other and read their classmate's responses to course topics. Moodle’s Workshop activity was used to manage the submission and review process. I …

Why does blended learning work? Some observers have suggested that students simply spend more time with the material in a blended course, but evidence from studies of blended courses is mixed. Learning science research suggests that how learners study also matters, and a blended learning approaches incorporate many tactics shown to be effective, such as formative assessment, repetition at intervals, and metacognitive prompting.

The Impact Of Small Group Instruction On The Reading Ability Of Three First Grade Students, Jillian Wilson
Undergraduate Research Conference
This literacy project investigated the impact of small group reading instruction on the reading ability of first graders. During fall 2012, the teacher candidate conducted research in a first grade classroom in a rural East Texas elementary school three days a week for an eight-week period. One purpose of this literacy project was to enable teacher candidates to gain experience conducting reading assessments, planning age appropriate reading lessons, and implementing those lessons in a small group instructional setting. Another purpose was to administer pre and post assessments to monitor the reading development of a group of students.

Do your students or teachers suffer from “nature deficit disorder”? Engage and interest students and teachers in the study of ecology and other content through the use of place-based resources to teach national and state standards. African Muslims played central roles in the largest forced migration in human history; the transatlantic slave trade. This presentation employs primary sources from the online collection of the National Humanities Center and from the Transatlantic Slave Trade Database (Emory University). Participants will engage in close reading of two memoirs of Muslim slaves, as well as three newspaper articles written in 1828. In addition, participants will receive geography exercises. Steganography is the art of hiding messages in plain sight but in a way so that only those in on the secret can find them. This session presents the Question Formulation Technique (QFT) and guides teachers through strategies for integrating it into their classroom practice. Using the QFT helps students think more critically and independently by asking and evaluating their own questions - whether elementary level, secondary, or beyond. Illinois History is often perceived as a contradiction in terms. Until the arrival of Abraham Lincoln, most folks think that nothing of any note happened here. This presentation will address the French traders and explorers from the Illinois Country who pushed west up the Missouri and Arkansas Rivers in the century preceding Lewis and Clark's more famous jaunt. The two knew of these French travelers only too well and recruited a half dozen Illinois French at Fort Massac and Kaskaskia to show them how to get to the "unknown". The effect these men had on the Plains was profound.
