How Television Is Affecting The Lives Of Sixth Graders In Kalamazoo – A Report From The Children, Charles R. Calhoun

Masters Theses

The Problem and Its Background

Audio-Visual Aids

The attention of children is attracted greatly to most of the objects and events they see and hear. Hence they become aware of their environments and learn chiefly through the experiences that come to them through the visual and auditory receptors. As a result educational programs are designed to take advantages of these facts. Audio-visual aids have therefore brought reality into the classroom by making maximal use of the audio-visual senses.

The extensive use of audio-visual aids in classroom teaching is in part evident in the number of motion-picture projectors in the high …

A Sociometric Study Of Popularity And Academic Achievement In A Ninth Grade Class, Elizabeth V. Banks

Masters Theses

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

It is common knowledge that education consists of more than training for academic achievement. It consists of teaching whole individuals how to live effectively in their social environments. Although it is almost impossible to teach them all the skills directly they can be helped to learn through experience a great number of them for themselves. These view-points with respect to the teaching of students are held not only by a great number of educational authorities but are also part of the educational practice of a great number of teachers. The Problem and Its Background

The Objectives of the Teaching of Science

The place of science education in the program of the secondary school has long been justified. Hence, recent committees have not dealt with the need for science courses, but, rather, have devoted their efforts toward establishing feasible objectives for the teaching of science, and toward developing curricula and courses of study that would meet these objectives. Among these various committees are two that have exerted great influence in developing feasible objectives for science teaching, and in suggesting curricula and courses of study.

A Study Of Factors Involved In Organizing And Administering A Student Activity Program For Tyson Junior High School, Joy Coulter Bauch

Masters Theses

(From Chapter I) In a time when public education is being adversely criticized on all sides by those who would find fault with any aspect of our public schools (apparently more for the sake of sensationalism and publicity than for constructive criticism), we must always be alert to accept the challenge to better our schools, maintain deep-rooted convictions concerning the education of our American youth, and strive to experiment and put into practice those concepts which may lead to better schools, better teachers, and a better educated American public. Although at times subjected to tirades from newspaper editorials …

A Study Of A High School Marriage And Family Course, Wendell P. Hill Jun 1952

A Study Of A High School Marriage And Family Course, Wendell P. Hill

Masters Theses

Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

The Objectives of Education

It is recognized that the public school is designed to do more than develop academic competence.1 The school must also develop emotional and social maturity in its charges. If the public school fails to take cognizance of the importance of these latter two objectives, it will fail also in meeting some of the more important objectives of education. A recent report of the Educational Policies Commission of the National Education Association supports this viewpoint clearly.

Masters Theses

Chapter I

The Problem and Its Background

Introduction

Man is a social or group animal. With few exceptions all the activities in which he indulges depend on the cooperation, presence, and in many cases the assistance of other men. Thus it can be seen that man is likely to seek the association of others so that his activities may be carried on more effectively.

The social function of man is illustrated in the comment of Cole and Bruce, that follows:1

"From the moment the child is born, and never ceasing thereafter throughout his life, his social environment teaches him …
