International Perspectives On Science Education, Mark A. Grey Jan 1993

International Perspectives On Science Education, Mark A. Grey

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Since the 1983 publication of A Nation at Risk (National Commission on Excellence in Education), comparisons of the American education system with those of other countries have become commonplace. Hundreds of articles on the subject have appeared in the popular, professional and academic literature, as well as in a number of books. Comparisons have also been driven by the "America 2000" campaign. The challenge to science educators in this campaign is explicit: "By the year 2000, United States students will be first in the world in science and mathematics achievement."

Teaching The Nature Of Science, Gerald R. Walsh Jan 1993

Teaching The Nature Of Science, Gerald R. Walsh

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Early in my teaching career, I came to the conclusion that my colleagues did not approach science in the same manner as language arts, social studies or math teachers approached their subjects. While we were trying to "stuff' our students with all kinds of information of a specific nature, they focused upon producing a general literacy. They did not presume the majority of their students would one day become authors, mathematicians or social workers; instead they assumed that all students required communication skills within their respective subjects. Their mission seemed to be the promotion of literacy within the framework of …

Estimation Of Percent Body Fat By Hydrostatic Weighing In High Schools, Fred W. Kolkhorst Jan 1993

Estimation Of Percent Body Fat By Hydrostatic Weighing In High Schools, Fred W. Kolkhorst

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Concerns with fitness have increased interest in body composition and ideal body weight. Although anthropometric (e.g. skinfold) measurements can quickly determine general body composition, hydrostatic weighings are more accurate. While most exercise physiology laboratories on university campuses have a specialized tank for performing hydrostatic weighings, adequate stations can be set up in any swimming pool for a minimal initial cost. Several scientific concepts can be demonstrated during this exercise: measurement of lung volumes, determination of body density and calculation of percent body fat.

Editor's Corner - Preserving Biodiversity: Notes To A Korean Grandson, Carl W. Bollwinkel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

One of the things that makes this world such a wonderful place is the variety of living things. There are thousands and thousands kinds of plants and animals. Some are so tiny we cannot see them without a magnifying glass. Some are bigger than elephants. Some, like parrots, have bright colors. Some, like orchids, have very strange shapes. Some, like people, come in different sizes, shapes and colors and do very interesting things. There are many differences in all these living things and we call this "diversity."
