Editor's Corner - Cuts, Carl W. Bollwinkel
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Everyone, or almost everyone, reading this editorial has experienced the effect of state budget cuts within the past year. All Iowans have directly or indirectly been affected. Most readers of this journal are Iowa educators who have felt the impact in their daily efforts to educate children. Those of us in higher education have been editorially described as working in a "university disaster area." Degree-required classes are not offered to students, offices operate without secretaries, buildings go without repairs and, it would seem, there is not even enough money to pay someone to clean the floors. The cuts are both …

An Inexpensive And Collapsible Plant Growth Frame, Al Janulaw, Mat Keller
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
This plant growth frame was designed for use in second and fourth grade classrooms as a part of National Science Foundation Grant TEI 8751303, Materials and Assistance for Science Teaching (MAST). We needed frames that were relatively inexpensive, could be made from locally available materials and would be easy to store when not in use. The frame is made from PVC pipe. The light source is a 48-inch, two-bulb shop light, using ordinary fluorescent tubes. A plug-in timer is used to control the time of illumination. Our first models included a plywood base, but some teachers have omitted this. The …

Science Notes - Student Opportunities To Name Features On Venus
Science Notes - Student Opportunities To Name Features On Venus
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
When astronomers and planetary geologists first see a new terrain feature on Venus, they typically assign both a descriptive term (like "crater," "corona" or "mons") as well as a particular name. Since Venus was the Roman goddess of love, scientists have decided to name its features after famous females throughout history. Most of the large features, like the Venusian land masses Aphrodite Terra and Ishtar Terra, have been named for love goddesses from other cultures. Although names for many of the craters have already been proposed, the International Astronomical Union, which is the sole authority for assigning names to celestial …

Meeting Iowa School Accreditation Standards Through Sts Science, John B. Cook
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) has declared that the goal of science education" ... is to develop scientifically literate individuals who understand how science, technology and society influence one another and who are able to use this knowledge in their everyday decision-making" (NSTA 1982). Strategies aimed at achieving this goal have been endorsed and promoted by a variety of groups. Yet, in many Iowa schools, the science curriculum is driven by traditional textbooks that emphasize narrow academic goals. Iowa school accreditation standards list specific requirements for the science program in grades 1-12. In addition, seven horizontal infusion areas must …
