Science Notes - Book News: Dictionary Of Word Roots & Combining Forms, Carl W. Bollwinkel
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
"What is this?" In answer to this frequently asked question, a name is usually given. Naming often terminates inquiry, but it need not if the meaning of the name is known. The meaning usually provides a bridge to inquiry into the life style of plants and animals and the function and characteristics of inanimate science objects. The Dictionary of Word Roots & Combining Forms is a concise tool for finding the interesting bits of meaning which may be derived from the names of the objects brought into the classroom.

Editor's Corner - Originality, Carl W. Bollwinkel
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The purpose of this journal is to provide an avenue for sharing ideas in the field of science education. Some old ideas which may not be widely known are certainly worth sharing. The new ideas which are worth sharing we particularly treasure - perhaps because there are so few of them. Most of the time we are doing a bit of rearranging of ideas and finding new applications. These are certainly helpful, and to share them seems a worthwhile goal.
How To Dry Plants In The Microwave Oven, Donald J. Perschau
How To Dry Plants In The Microwave Oven, Donald J. Perschau
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Heidi Hopp, one of my students, has developed the following method to press and dry herbarium specimens in a microwave oven. I have experimented with various plants using Heidi's method and have found that it works most of the time. While this method works best with non-waxy thin foliage (i.e. Poinsettia) it does a fair job on juicy plants (i.e. African violets) and waxy ones (i.e. Pin oak).

The Iowa Physics Project: Past, Present, And Future, Timothy M. Cooney, Roy D. Unruh

Iowa, along with many other states, has been faced with a loss of qualified physics teachers to the private sector for better salaries. This has created a shortage of people qualified to teach physics. A study by Howe and Gerlovich (1983) indicated that the majority of states in the United States are experiencing serious shortages of "qualified" science and math teachers. Science consultants from each state were asked to rate the supply of science and mathematics teachers on a Likert Scale ranging from one to five (1 = surplus and 5 = critical shortage) in the years from 1980 to …

The Nature Of Science As A Model For Teaching For Conceptualization, Robert W. Hanson
The Nature Of Science As A Model For Teaching For Conceptualization, Robert W. Hanson
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Many teachers of methods courses for future secondary science teachers probably share my observation that high marks in conventional college science courses do not always indicate a good grasp of how science has developed as a human enterprise. In spite of efforts of curriculum developers and vast expenditures of public funds to improve science teaching in our secondary schools, the typical science background of a beginning teacher consists of a body of content with traditional disciplinary boundaries created by departments that view science in terms of their own specialized subject matter. Little emphasis is given to a broad view of …
Earth Science Teacher Excellent And Otherwise: Is There A Difference?, Kenneth Thompson, Darrel Hoff
Earth Science Teacher Excellent And Otherwise: Is There A Difference?, Kenneth Thompson, Darrel Hoff
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Teaching effectiveness is a much debated topic. Yager and Lunetta (1984) have suggested that the lack of teacher effectiveness is a part of the current crisis in science education. Hawley, et al. (1984) makes it clear that teachers are important determiners of student achievement, and Medley (1979) concurs, saying "The effect of schooling on the individual pupil depends to a considerable extent on how his teacher is." But how can teacher effectiveness be determined? Historically, teacher effectiveness has been judged to be a product of a variety of factors including personality types, teaching methods, classroom climate and teacher competencies. Others …
