Ten Iowa high school seniors have received four-year, full-tuition scholarships designed for young Iowans interested in careers in science. The ten biotechnology scholarships in agriculture were awarded to students who will enroll in Iowa State University's College of Agriculture to study the basic sciences that undergird biotechnology.

In order to identify teaching problems and student motivational factors, and to determine which environmental topics of study are perceived to be of greatest importance for grades 4-12, the Iowa Conservation Education Center (CEC) conducted a survey of Iowa science teachers. The results of this survey should be helpful to teachers planning environmental activities or field trips. The information will also aid various organizations in their efforts to improve services for student groups and teacher workshops.

The White House recently announced the names of 108 teachers honored with Presidential Awards for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching. Iowa teachers Ross L. Iverson (science) from Miller Junior High of Marshalltown and Christopher R. Olsen (mathematics) from Washington Senior High School of Cedar Rapids were among the recipients of this prestigious award.

There have been indications that exposure to electromagnetic fields produced by voltage power lines have permanent effects on living organisms. I found studies on electromagnetic field effects on rodents and humans, but there has been little research done with plants. The purpose of my study was to record any measurable effects on desert shrubs in an area of Succor Creek, Oregon, produced by an adjacent 500 KV power line.

The Criteria for Analysis and Selection of Science Textbooks Project has worked since April 1985 to improve science textbooks and related materials used by teachers and students. Science teachers, administrators, publishers, researchers, and others have joined to focus attention on issues that must be considered to successfully bring about the changes we need.

The letter which my colleague shared struck me as being a science teacher's ticket to Texas, courtesy of the Iowa economy, the Iowa legislature and the local school board.

During the past two years, as I have worked with the University of Iowa's Chautauqua program, I have become concerned that relatively few science teachers have begun to incorporate Science/fechnology/Society (STS) materials into their existing curriculum. Lack of a concrete definition of Science/fechnology/Society has often served to frustrate teachers and disinterest them in using the concept even though they have already used many of the ideas in their teaching. A little creativity can often overcome a lack of "cook-book" rules in setting up an STS project and can produce a very rewarding experience in science education. Much has been written …

The key to understanding and explaining the physical world around us is observation. The recent study "Vegetation Communities of Ledges State Park, Boone County, Iowa" Johnson-Groh, 1985) is largely observation. On the other extreme, even the most theoretical research done with paper, pencil and computer must be compared with observations of that which it hopes to explain. The first step in doing science, or studying science, is to observe.

A primary level lesson based on learning to know major plant parts is included in almost every elementary science textbook series. This lesson not only teaches the names of the organs of higher plants, but also offers an experience in classification using the learning cycle (Rubba, 1984). The plant part puzzles needed for this activity can be prepared easily from materials at hand and stored for reuse.
