Iowa Diatoms: Part Ii (Preparation), James Hungerford
Iowa Diatoms: Part Ii (Preparation), James Hungerford
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
This is the second in a series of articles on Iowa diatoms. The first article appeared in the Dec. 1978 issue of the Iowa Science Teachers Journal and dealt with the collection of diatoms in the field. After collecting diatoms in the field and labeling the collection jars properly, you must now prepare the diatoms for study in the laboratory. This article outlines the basic techniques for preparing diatoms for laboratory study.
Acetate Peels From Iowa Carbonate Rocks, Wayne I. Anderson, Mary Hogan
Acetate Peels From Iowa Carbonate Rocks, Wayne I. Anderson, Mary Hogan
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Iowa's rock record is noted for its abundance of carbonate rocks. These carbonate rocks, limestones and dolomites, contain interesting textural features and an abundance of fossils. The fossils can often be removed from the rock matrix and studied. The fossils can also be studied in cut and polished slabs of rock or by making thin sections of the rock. Thin sections are prepared by cutting a thin slice from the rock and gluing the slice on a glass slide. The rock slice is then ground-down with abrasives to a thickness of .030 mm., covered with a coverslip, and studied with …

Even the most casual survey of the uses of hydrogen peroxide would demonstrate that it is considered to be one of the safest oxidizing reagents available. Hundreds of useful commercial applications employ dilute H202 - water mixtures for bleaches, bubbling agents, mild cleansers and other gentle oxidation processes. The use of hydrogen peroxide in the teaching laboratory is recommended as far safer than the use of the pennanganates, nitrates, dichromates, chlorates and perchlorates which might otherwise be employed. The 3% solution is used to clean open cuts or employed as mouthwash. Analytical laboratories, employing higher concentrations, would …

Decapods Of Iowa (Part Ii), Gary Phillips
Decapods Of Iowa (Part Ii), Gary Phillips
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Since the classic work of T.H. Huxley in 1880 on The Crayfish, decapods have been widely used in teaching elementary zoology, as well as for research along more advanced lines. Traditionally decapods have been used to demonstrate various characteristics typical of arthropods in general. Among these are the open circulatory system, ventral nervous system and segmentation.
Energy Quiz
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
America, with about 6% of the world's population, consumes about 30% of the world's available energy. The average American citizen consumes about seven times the energy of other world citizens. But what does the average citizen know about this energy that is used in a too casual manner?
Is There A Greater Role For Insects As Food?, G. R. Defoliart
Is There A Greater Role For Insects As Food?, G. R. Defoliart
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The world food deficit has resulted in an expanded effort to find new sources of protein. With significant research efforts directed toward development of oilseed, leaf, fish and single cell concentrates, it is surprising that insects have been almost totally overlooked. They are a natural food for many kinds of animals and they are used widely as food by some human populations, especially in the tropics where they help compensate for the general deficiency in animal proteins, fats and calories. The few biochemical studies done to date indicate that insect protein is of high quality.

Iowa's Climate, Paul Waite
Iowa's Climate, Paul Waite
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Living, as we are in Iowa, we are well aware of the effects upon our activities of the ever changing climate, which is, in itself, the summation of the even more variable daily weather. No one of us can escape the fact that our climate profoundly affects our energy, occupation, recreation, transportation, shelter, and food supply.

The Need For A Philosophical Approach In The Teaching Of Science, Everett F. Morris
The Need For A Philosophical Approach In The Teaching Of Science, Everett F. Morris
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In his paper, Slock (1977) commented upon a different view of what science is and how it operates. It has been my experience that prospective secondary science teachers are extremely deficient in this area. Perhaps, it is not a different view that is needed as much as a definite viewpoint that is needed.

A Classroom Savonius Windmill, William G. Hoffman
A Classroom Savonius Windmill, William G. Hoffman
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The Savonius or S-rotor windmill was introduced to the United States in 1924. The powershaft is located in the vertical plane rather than horizontally as in the traditional bladed Stuart windmill. This has several benefits. The windmill does not need a wind direction seeking vane since it doesn't matter from which direction the wind is blowing. Also, power is available at the base of the mill rather than at the top of the tower. The Savonius mill is also less easily damaged by high winds than the traditional windmill.

Some National Trends In High School Science Education And Their Influence In Iowa, Jack Gerlovich
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In August, 1978, a NEW sponsored National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) report was issued entitled, Three Assessments of Science: Changes in Achievement 1969-77. The report indicated a 4.7 percent decrease in science achievement scores for 17 year-old high school students since 1969. During the same time period, 2.5 percent and 1.4 percent declines were reported for 13 and 9 year olds in science, respectively. Declines were observed to be greater in the physical than the biological sciences.

'"As a professional in this business of testmaking, I am much more aware of the limitations of testing than most laymen. Achievement tests such as ours are designed as tools to help teachers do their jobs. Scores from them cannot be used as final judgments on anything - not children, not teachers, not schools and certainly not American education in general."
