In the advanced vertebrates, including man, the two large hemispheres of the cerebrum of the brain serve as centers of perception, of voluntary motion, and of the higher mental faculties such as thought and memory. The two hemispheres are connected by several bands of nerve tissue the major tissue being the corpus callosum. The two hemispheres control the motor and sensory responses of the opposite sides of the body. Some hemispheric differences in function were reported as early as 1861 when Dr. Paul Broca observed that patients with lesions on their left cerebral hemispheres were more likely to suffer loss …

Human Physiology And Anatomy: For All Students At The Same Time, Irene M. Edgar
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
How should a specialized science course in high school be taught? Should it be treated as a career education course or as a general survey course? Should it follow traditional methods or should it be individualized? These questions were explored in teaching a two semester course in Human Physiology and Anatomy at Dubuque Senior High School. This course attracts students who plan a post-high school career in health oriented fields, as well as students interested in additional exploratory study that goes beyond general biology. In addition, others enroll for needed science credits. As a result, the course must service a …

Educational experiences often tend to leave children with the feeling that there is only one pathway to success. At an early age children are taught to perceive in a way consistent with an adult viewpoint. This is accomplished through repetitive conditioning during which children are taught that an adult, who possesses authority, perceives correctly. As a result, children begin to think in "acceptable" traditional modes and base their behavior on the standards and expectations of others.

Decapods Of Iowa (Part I), Gary Phillips
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Decapods are a fascinating group of animals which inhabit most aquatic environments in Iowa. As they are secretive, their habits are not well known. However, they play an important role in Iowa's aquatic communities and are worthy of more attention by biology teachers and their students. Decapods are members of the class Crustacea, a group of arthropods with gills and heavy, crust-like exoskeletons. Crustaceans include such diverse forms as the microscopic water fleas and copepods, the larger sowbugs and amphipods and the more familiar decapods such as crayfish and river shrimp. All decapods have ten walking legs. In Iowa, decapods …

Learning To Write Chemical Equations Is Something Else, Robert W. Hanson
Learning To Write Chemical Equations Is Something Else, Robert W. Hanson
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Chemical equations are the stock-in-trade for much of what is expected of students in the first semester of college chemistry. Knowing how to read them, balance them, and interpret them in terms of molar ratios or stoichiometry is one thing; being able to write them from chemical knowledge or from experimental observations is another.

The Endangered And Uncommon Amphibians And Reptiles Of Iowa - Salamandars, James L. Christiansen, Russell R. Burken
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Iowa has 23 amphibian and reptilian species whose known populations or ranges within the state are so small as to justify their inclusion in the state's endangered or threatened list (Roosa, 1977). This paper is intended to inform the Iowa scientific teaching community of the plight of these species and to recruit help in gathering information relative to their distribution. Most of the information presented here has been accumulated by Christiansen and Bailey (manuscripts in preparation or in press) in their work on the amphibians and reptiles of Iowa.
