The Iowa Association of Science Teachers (IAST) was formed in 1907 for "promoting interest in science teaching in secondary schools." This organization functioned for several years as a strong and influential organization with membership in all of the largest secondary schools in the State. Various special reports and newsletters served as the "journal" for this early organization.

Holography: Capturing The Third Dimension, Michael Timmons

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Holography, the three-dimensional recording of interference patterns on film has unlimited possibilities in the fields of science, art, technology, and media. Three types of holograms, the "flat" or plane, circular, and white light, are presently being produced successfully and inexpensively in the high school situation. The novelty of holography arouses curiosity while allowing the student to experience the application of interference phenomenon.

Science Foundations: A Science Program For The Non-Science Major, James A. Shymansky Jan 1976

Science Foundations: A Science Program For The Non-Science Major, James A. Shymansky

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The Science Foundations program at the University of Iowa consists of a sequence of general science courses designed specifically for the non-science student. The program is unique both in course content and instructional strategy. Recognizing that student backgrounds and needs differ greatly between the science and non-science major, the Foundations program is offered as an alternative to the traditional lecture-based science courses. Whereas the lecture-based courses emphasize the recall and application of factual material, Science Foundations stresses problem- solving strategies based on laboratory experience. Consequently, practically all of a student's time is devoted to "hands-on" activity with problems in the …

Excellence In Science Teaching Award Program Prior To 1976, David Mccalley

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The Iowa Academy of Science has a long and distinguished record of encouraging improvement in science education within Iowa's public and parochial schools. Evidence of this may be seen in its support of the Iowa Junior Academy of Science, The Iowa Science Teachers Journal and various Academy committees having as their major concern the promotion of science education. In past years, the Recognition and Awards Committee of Iowa Academy of Science has functioned to identify outstanding science and mathematics teachers in Iowa.

Scientific Bulb Snatching, V. G. Devonald Jan 1976

Scientific Bulb Snatching, V. G. Devonald

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The subject of plant morphology is frequently considered a boring topic by both teacher and pupil, and consequently given a somewhat inadequate treatment. Several reasons can be adduced for this unfortunate neglect of a field of knowledge which is, in fact, particularly suitable for intensive study in schools. An unnecessary restriction of teaching types (e.g., broad bean, crocus, sweet pea, etc.) may evoke bored familiarity, or the subject may be given such a superficial treatment that no morphological analysis is achieved and interest is not aroused. Often, a grossly teleological approach is adopted in teaching morphology and many unproven assumptions …

Iowa - Upstep: A Program Overview, Vincent N. Lunetta Jan 1976

Iowa - Upstep: A Program Overview, Vincent N. Lunetta

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Over the past five years the program for science teacher preparation at the University of Iowa has been in the process of gradual evolution. The changes have been stimulated by a grant from the National Science Foundation, by teachers, and by science educators. Many teachers in the state of Iowa have played a major role in the development of the current program. In the current UPSTEP program the professional education sequence has become more thoroughly integrated with the student's total program and incorporates a series of clinical experiences in the schools.

What Good Is An Old Spear Point?, Duane C. Anderson Jan 1976

What Good Is An Old Spear Point?, Duane C. Anderson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Not long ago I came in contact with a young learner named Kelly who was fascinated by Indian artifacts. He had amassed a sizable collection and wanted to find out more about his discoveries--things like how old the items were, what they were used for, and by whom. These and other questions need to be answered, not just for Kelly, but for people of all ages who live in Iowa, for we all have a right to a knowledge of the past.

The Computer In High School Science Instruction, James J. Hungerford, Richard L. Carter Jan 1976

The Computer In High School Science Instruction, James J. Hungerford, Richard L. Carter

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Computers appear to have a useful function in futuristic science classrooms. Urquhart states, "computers have a promising future as an instructional tool in biology." The purpose for utilizing computers as supplements to standard educational media is to simulate complex situations or demonstrate complex concepts that would be impractical to duplicate in classrooms due to time consuming computations, expense, or lack of equipment.

Amoebas That Can "Blow Your Mind", Eugene C. Bovee Jan 1976

Amoebas That Can "Blow Your Mind", Eugene C. Bovee

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Until the mid-1950's it was assumed by biologists and physicians that the only amoeba that endangered human comfort is the one that infects the digestive tract, causing amoebic dysentery in the susceptible and unwary tourist exposed to its more virulent varieties. Although that one, known to biologists as Entamoeba histolytica, sometimes escapes to the other parts of the body to cause sores and disturbances, it rarely causes death of its host, being a generally "well-behaved" parasite.

In This Corner: Career Education, Steven K. Halstead Jan 1976

In This Corner: Career Education, Steven K. Halstead

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Often science educators feel that career education belongs in the Industrial Arts or Vocational Agriculture or Home Economics classroom but not in the Science classroom. Since Sputnik, science educators have been selling their course offerings by talking about the vast technological society in which we live and how the job market needs scientifically literate workers. Too often, however, these same educators view career education only as the production of pre-professional scientists. They seem not to include nurses, laboratory technicians and other applied fields in science vocations.

How To Recover Microfossils From Common Iowa Rocks, Wayne I. Anderson Jan 1976

How To Recover Microfossils From Common Iowa Rocks, Wayne I. Anderson

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The rocks of Iowa contain a great abundance and variety of fossils. Megafossils, those fossils of sufficient size to be seen with the unaided eye, are abundant in many Iowa quarries and roadcuts and are therefore common in most fossil collections of Iowa teachers and students. Unknown to many, however, is the fact that the abundance and diversity of fossils in the microscopic range is equally great. This article describes techniques by which microfossils can be recovered from sedimentary rocks, illustrates and describes some common microfossils and suggest some localities for collecting samples of microfossils.

Aerosols And The Atmosphere, Darrel Hoff Jan 1976

Aerosols And The Atmosphere, Darrel Hoff

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In recent months concern has been expressed about the effect of certain aerosol sprays on the protective ozone layer of the atmosphere. This is a current environmental issue and it seems an appropriate topic for discussion in the high school science classroom. Like many environmental issues, the aerosol issue is not as clearly defined as is sometimes presented in the general media, and it should therefore be approached with an open mind by both teachers and students.
