A Learning Activity Package Approach To Junior High School Science, Jerry Cunningham, Ross Iverson
A Learning Activity Package Approach To Junior High School Science, Jerry Cunningham, Ross Iverson
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Our goals were to have a low-structured student centered program that made the best use of our physical facility, equipment, and teacher power. As a result, we formulated a design which included a format, procedures, and a set of materials. We feel that our design is adaptable to many situations and may provide some ideas for you. The courses we teach are exploratory. We hope to offer the student a wide variety of new experiences while developing a continuing interest in the study of science and a systematic approach to solving problems.

One of the current fads spreading through the schools of Iowa is the attention being given to mysticism. The science teacher can do a great deal to give the youth of our schools the proper attitude to deal with the technics of the occult. One of the sessions of the Science Teaching Section of the spring meeting of the Iowa Academy will be related to dealing with the problems of the occult.

A New Approach To The Training Of Chemistry / Physics Teachers, Kenneth E. Borst
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In 1950, during my first week as a junior high school science teacher, it became apparent to me that my training to become such a teacher was almost a complete waste of time. I have also observed that there has been very little effort on the part of colleges to change the situation.

Science For The Educationally Uninvolved Student, Joe R. Moore
Science For The Educationally Uninvolved Student, Joe R. Moore
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
In looking at science in today's high schools, one can come up with the following statistics. There are approximately four million students at each grade level between grades nine to 12. In biology classes we find 1.85 million students, in chemistry about 1.25 million and in physics only .25 million students. Over half of these students are enrolled in terminal or "slow-track" science courses, where they are neglected or forgotten, taught by the beginning teacher in a non-lab-oriented classroom. Almost every high school has a science course where the so-called "slow-learners" have been placed. These courses may come under a …

What Is A.T.T.V. Biology?, Charles Frederick
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
A.T.T.V. Biology (Audio-tutorial Television Biology) is an approach to teaching a subject which is paced by closed circuit educational television. The curriculum material of the course is divided into units of work (modules). Each module consists of one week's classroom activities. For each module there are objectives and learning experiences to be completed within that week. The module suggests the minimal work expected of the student, and the student works directly from the module guide. When the student has completed the minimal learning experiences, he is free to pursue additional activities that are listed in the module. This is where …

A Comparison Of The Effects Of A Team Approach And A Conventional Approach On Achievement In High School Biology, Paul Joslin, John Montean, John Schmitt
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
It is very easy to come by reports in support of almost any new practice in education. Teachers would rather report favorable results and journals would rather print them. It was the many published reports enumerating the advantages of team teaching that first interested us in a team teaching experiment. At the time we started in 1964, we summarized 141 publications with team teaching in their titles. There are only a limited number of advantages and disadvantages that can be hypothesized for any particular practice. It was not surprising, therefore, to find that recent reports tend to merely reassemble what …
A Study Of Physics, Chemistry And Advanced Science Enrollments In Iowa's Area Ten With Reference To Enrollment Patterns In The State Of Iowa, Richard E. Mcqueen
A Study Of Physics, Chemistry And Advanced Science Enrollments In Iowa's Area Ten With Reference To Enrollment Patterns In The State Of Iowa, Richard E. Mcqueen
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
This study was initiated under the assumption that advanced science courses could be shown to detract from physics enrollments, thus establishing one possible cause of the continuously declining enrollments in physics in Iowa's Area Ten and nationwide. Initial work failing to support this relationship, a study of chemistry enrollments was added, chemistry enrollments being felt to be indicative of emphasis on science, with or without an advanced course. Information on enrollments in Area Ten was taken directly from teachers' responses to a questionnaire on such enrollments for 1969-70, received from all 43 public and seven parochial, private or special schools …

"You can't unscramble an egg." This phrase and many others throughout literature are examples of what physicists have come to call entropy. The concept of entropy is unique because, unlike the conservation of momentum and the conservation of energy, there is no principle of conservation of entropy.

The nation's science teachers are proclaiming scientific literacy as the goal of their efforts for the 1970s. Summary Of A 15-Month Biology Articulation Program Through Drake University, Everett Drevs
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
During the summer of 1970, a five-day workshop was held at Drake to begin our 15-month articulation program. Discussion of textbooks and their merits and identification of lab manuals used was our first consideration. Many sessions were held on the criteria for evaluation of biology programs and facilities, with a rating scale for our use developed after discussions on ideal conditions.
