Unusual Ph.D. Program Supported

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Support of an unusual graduate program in science and mathematics education is provided by a National Science Foundation grant of $29,700 awarded today to the University of California at Berkeley. Known as "SESAME" (Search for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Education), the recently established program leads to a Ph.D. Its aim is to offer students the opportunity to combine advanced training in one of the natural sciences or mathematics with the pursuit of central interests in science education.

A False Sense Of "Discovery", Darrell G. Phillips Jan 1970

A False Sense Of "Discovery", Darrell G. Phillips

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Within the past few years the terms "discovery" and "inquiry" have come into vogue in educational circles. These terms, and those of similar connotation, are found in science curriculum programs, magazine and journal articles, and papers presented at professional meetings. It has also become apparent that certain textbook publishers are extremely sensitive to the "in" terms; one finds that such words have been carefully inserted into the introduction or preface of some outdated science textbooks.

Study Of Science Facilities Jan 1970

Study Of Science Facilities

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The National Science Teachers Association is embarking on a nationwide study of facilities for the teaching of science at the secondary school level. The study will cover in-school facilities-laboratories, classrooms, and special-purpose rooms, such as greenhouses and planetariums-and facilities outside the school, such as outdoor education centers that are used for science programs.

A Description Of An Experiment Involving The Use Of A Modified Drum-Type Spherometer For Measuring The Rate Of Weathering, Darrell D. Young

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

For the teacher who is interested in teaching a unit on weathering, the cemetery may provide unlimited amounts of data. As an exercise in weathering, a measuring instrument was devised and tested by the author on tombstones in the Buffalo area. The instrument used and the results of the test are described as follows.

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

In January of 1970 the author completed a study at The University of Iowa. In general the purpose of the study was to compare student outcomes as a result of exposure to an individualized and a group approach to teaching the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS) course.

Far-Nix And Lar-Nix Diesected, Charles J. Ellis Jan 1970

Far-Nix And Lar-Nix Diesected, Charles J. Ellis

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

High school teachers do a wonderful job. This observation is of long standing and particularly true when one considers the "handicaps" under which these teachers operate. They not only must give of themselves and of their time, but each must be the disciplinarian, father-confessor, and big-buddy of the students. They must cope with school boards and parents, take tickets and usher! For all their expertise in these many areas, we on the "outside" thank these teachers.

How We Raise Clean, Healthy Amoeba Proteus, Eugene C. Bovee, Sandra C. Thompson, Mercedes L. Acuña

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

We so frequently use Amoeba proteus for observation and experimentation in our classes in Cell Structure and Function, and Physiological Protozoology at the University of Kansas, that it has been necessary to avoid buying the many needed cultures from any of the major biological suppliers. Consequently, we have had to devise a reasonably reliable method of our own to culture that amoeba.

The Multi-Media Approach To Biology, Lena M. Keithahn Jan 1970

The Multi-Media Approach To Biology, Lena M. Keithahn

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

"If at first you don't succeed, you are just about average." This flippant statement of a common experience has led to the multi-media approach in an attempt to make the learning of biology for the average sixteen year old who scores between 35 to 89 on the comprehensive test of the ITED more meaningful and successful.

Batteries And Bulbs With An Average Class Of Ninth Graders, Richard D. Mcvey Jan 1970

Batteries And Bulbs With An Average Class Of Ninth Graders, Richard D. Mcvey

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

During the fall semester of 1969 I had occasion to try some elementary science units with a low group of ninth graders. Of the units tried, the E.S.S. "Batteries and Bulbs" had such interesting results that it instilled in me the idea of trying the unit with my regular ninth grade class.

Do Honey Bees Learn To Work? (An Excerpt From Sophomores And Honey Bees), Richard F. Trump Jan 1970

Do Honey Bees Learn To Work? (An Excerpt From Sophomores And Honey Bees), Richard F. Trump

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Another question that your students can answer for themselves is whether bees really inherit their work behavior. That's what we tell our students - that bees are creatures of instinct. And expect our students to believe it. We all know, of course, that too much of our teaching is like that. The least we can do is to offer evidence. Better yet, we can give the students a chance to see for themselves.

The Need For Sex Education, R. J. Vanden Branden Jan 1970

The Need For Sex Education, R. J. Vanden Branden

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

There is no shortage of information and misinformation about sex education; however, it is difficult to determine which information is based upon more than personal bias and experience. Educators profess to educate children in those aspects of behavioral change which are based upon the needs of the students. The assumption is that if a need exists that is not otherwise being met, the schools must satisfy that need. Is sex education such a need?

High School Biology Training And Introductory College Biology Success, Stanley Whelchel, David Pettus Jan 1970

High School Biology Training And Introductory College Biology Success, Stanley Whelchel, David Pettus

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

High School biology teachers are occasionally concerned with curriculum problems such as: 1. Should BSCS biology be introduced in the curriculum, and if it is, will the students do well in the introductory biology courses in college? 2. Should two biology courses be offered at the high school level, and will the second course really prepare a student better for college biology?

Identifying And Growing Biochemical Mutants Of Arabidopsis Thaliana, Sujit K. Dhar Jan 1970

Identifying And Growing Biochemical Mutants Of Arabidopsis Thaliana, Sujit K. Dhar

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Beadle and Tatum (1945) irradiated bread mold fungus, Neurospora spores, with X-ray and isolated biochemical mutants by their inability to grow in minimal medium. They identified the defective pathways by finding a particular amino acid, vitamin, or nucleotide which, being added to the medium, remedied the defect.

Rallying Cry For Truly Logical Animal Lover, Michael O'Donnell Jan 1970

Rallying Cry For Truly Logical Animal Lover, Michael O'Donnell

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

On attending a recent animal-protection rally, I noticed that a great deal was said about outrages against the nobler and cuddlier animals but nothing at all about the daily slaughter of many millions of microorganisms. I have therefore composed an anthem which I hope will prove a rallying cry for the truly logical animal lover.

Into The Crystal Ball For The 1970s, Joe R. Moore Jan 1970

Into The Crystal Ball For The 1970s, Joe R. Moore

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The beginning of a new decade is always an ideal time to reflect upon the past-and the future. Looking back, the decade of the sixties can be characterized as the decade of tumult, the decade of change, the decade of progress-and depending upon one's past experiences-many other adjectives will probably be equally descriptive.

Science Teachers' Knowledge Of Sound Theory, Jerry Underfer Jan 1970

Science Teachers' Knowledge Of Sound Theory, Jerry Underfer

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

J. W. Warren has written a book recently which gives a critical review of mistaken ideas which are conveyed by physics textbooks and overlooked by physics teachers. Although Warren doesn't consider the area of sound to any extent, the situation is analogous. As he points out, errors and misleading material which are published for years while books pass through several editions gravely mislead students.
