A wise choice of emphasis was made in 1932 when the Junior Academy of Science was organized and supported by the Iowa Academy of Science. All activities involved secondary teachers and students. Activities included science club, community-service projects, individual and group science projects, essays, and an annual meeting in conjunction with the Iowa Academy of Science.
Etymology: A Plea For Its Use In Early Education, Charles J. Ellis
Etymology: A Plea For Its Use In Early Education, Charles J. Ellis
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
My belief, based upon watching numerous students mature at Iowa State University, is, if etymology were stressed in primary and secondary schools, more older students would feel less burdened with so-called big, scientific names as well as nonscientific terms.

What Do I Do Now, Teacher?????, Milbert H. Krohn

Fifteen years of science fairs has brought me into contact with excitement, danger, success, failure, and freakishness such as never could be known if the spontaneity and creativity of youth had not been challenged. The writer is not sure whether science fairs are necessary or not. Sometimes, after they are over, the justification for another is like hitting yourself on the head with a hammer because it feels so good when you stop. Let's go back, readers, to some things in the past.

Nature Of The Antinatriuretic Action Of Growth Hormone, Ronald R. Bach
Nature Of The Antinatriuretic Action Of Growth Hormone, Ronald R. Bach
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Three interrelated experiments were initiated to study growth hormone's stimulation of urinary sodium retention. First a dose-response curve was determined by administration of known dosages of growth hormone or the vehicle to groups of rats. Urine was collected from four to six hours after administration. In a second experiment, the relationship between time and degree of response to growth hormone was determined. Urine was collected from 0-2, 2-4, 4-6, 6-8, 8-10, 12-14, 16-18, and 20-22 hours after administration. Sodium excretion was not altered in the 0-2 hour collection period. Significant retention took place in both the 2-4 and 4-6 hour …
Physics Is Too For Girls, Floyd D. Goar
Physics Is Too For Girls, Floyd D. Goar
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
For several years there has been concern about the lack of girls in physics classes and, more recently, the lack of boys. The idea for an all-girl class has been in the back of my mind for some time because just watching the few girls in my physics classes each year gave me the impression that they weren't really enjoying themselves.

Did you greet eager, inquisitive students last September that for some reason unknown to you became inactive and bored by May? What possibly is the cause for the decline in student enthusiasm?
The Dual Crisis In Science And Society, Barry Commoner
The Dual Crisis In Science And Society, Barry Commoner
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Our present achievements in science and technology appear to contrast vividly with our present lack of achievement in solving social problems. We can nourish a man in the supreme isolation of outer space-but we cannot adequately feed the children of Calcutta or Harlem. We hope to analyze life on other planets-but we have not yet learned to understand our own neighbors. We are attempting to live on the moon-but we cannot yet live peacefully on our own planet.

A Change And A Parting: Nuffield Biology In England, Carmon Slater
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
An appreciation of the problems encountered by curriculum innovations in England cannot truly be gained without first catching a glimpse of the educational system in this country, particularly the secondary school system. The British secondary student will usually be found in one of three basic secondary schools, i.e., the traditional grammar school, the secondary modem school, or a comprehensive secondary school.
The Imbalance Of Nature, Chalmer J. Roy
The Imbalance Of Nature, Chalmer J. Roy
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
On this fantastically dynamic planet, what can be the meaning of the balance of nature? The dynamics of the atmosphere, of the oceans, and of the solid earth show no signs of reaching an equilibrium, a condition of no change. Nature does not obey laws. The so-called laws of nature are human constructs, designed to explain observed relationships and phenomena.

More than 60,400,000 Americans are engaged full-time in the nation's educational enterprise as students, teachers, or administrators. Nearly another 140,000 make education a time-consuming avocation as trustees of local school systems, state boards of education, or institutions of higher learning. The breakdown is given here.

Developing Physics Concepts Through The Process Of Variation, Walter J. Gohman
Developing Physics Concepts Through The Process Of Variation, Walter J. Gohman
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The present trend in the design of physics courses is to place emphasis on understanding rather than the rote memory of ideas and processes. The development of systematic approaches to direct thought patterns decreases the memory burden. The process of variation provides a universal thought pattern that can be applied in almost all phases of physics. This paper provides a brief description of some selected sample applications. It is hoped that these will illustrate the scope and the merit of this approach.
