ABSTRACT

Although considerable research has been conducted on the adjustment of international students to U.S universities and culture, as well as research on first-experience courses, little research is available on the impacts of first-year experience courses on international student adjustment. This dissertation focuses on how a first-year experience course affected the student adaptation of new undergraduate international students enrolled at Iowa State University for Fall 2015.

Over the past several decades, United States institutions of higher education have experienced increased enrollment from international students. However, researchers have long acknowledged that many international students experience problems adjusting to life and studying in the United States, including culturally, academically, socially, and psychologically. The focus of this quantitative study was academic engagement of international students at community colleges. By highlighting the role of cultural heritage in students’ engagement preferences, this study sought to create a culturally sensitive measurement model of academic engagement of international students linking research-based knowledge about college student engagement and the influence of culture on educational processes. The purpose of this study is three fold: (1) to enhance understanding about Chinese undergraduate students' experience when applying to U.S. higher education institutions; (2) to examine rationale of Chinese students using, or not using, an agent to assist their application process and to identify differences or similarities between the two groups; and (3) to explore roles that agents play in Chinese undergraduates' application process and to identify to what extent agents assist their college application preparation.
