Predicting Transfer Students' Selection Of A Stem Major And Academic Adjustment: A Study Of Community College Students At A Midwestern University, Terry Burdell Gaalswyk

This research project investigated differences between transfer students choosing STEM- and non-STEM-related majors, determined the factors affecting a transfer student's choice of a STEM- or non-STEM-related major, and examined differences in academic adjustment between STEM and non-STEM students.

The results suggest differences in the background characteristics of students with non-STEM and those with STEM majors. Parental income of students with STEM majors was lower and students with STEM majors were primarily male. The use of online learning to teach academic courses in higher education is increasing

(Allen & Seaman, 2011; Baehr, 2012; Pastore & Carr-Chellman, 2009). The use of online

learning modules can be used to replace face-to-face classroom lecture. Research in the field

of e-learning and adult learners supports the use of interactive e-learning to aid in

engagement of learner and with knowledge retention (Bozarth, 2008; Clark, 2008, 2010;

This multi-case study explored individual and organizational perspective change by analyzing two long-term, management-supported professional development courses within the Cooperative Extension Service (CES). Data sources consisted of a survey of course participants, and interviews of selected participants and course designers. More than one half of the participants in both courses self-reported a perspective change, although only 5 of the 16 participant interviews revealed premise reflection--a necessary condition in this study for a perspective change. This qualitative study focused on the life journeys of four ELCA college presidents. Specifically, it examined how life journeys informed their ascendency to the presidency. In this study, life journeys are defined as "the professional and personal happenings the participants experienced during their professional years prior to earning an ELCA presidency." Wage gaps between men and women have narrowed since 1970. There have been many explanations offered for this decline, but the most common have been the increased likelihood that women complete college, a narrowing of gender differences in occupational choice, and a reduction in wage discrimination. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to understand rural community college faculty members' experiences with work engagement. As community college enrollments grow, it becomes increasingly important to have faculty who are engaged in their work. Recent research suggests engaged students require engaged faculty (Kezar, 2011). One of the most significant factors in student learning and graduation are the interactions and relationships students develop with faculty members (Kuh, Kinzie, Schuh, & Whitt, 2010). This study addressed how rural community college faculty members perceive, experience, and sustain work engagement, as well as why work engagement is important in rural community college faculty.

Two rural community colleges, one small and one mid-sized, were investigated. While these colleges differed in size, they shared similar characteristics in course offerings, programs, and extracurricular activities. Data collection consisted of one-on-one interviews of both full-time faculty members and faculty administrators; in addition, documents and websites were reviewed.
