Although research on teachers’ comments on student papers is fairly common and has remained an ongoing area of interest since at least the 1970s, composition studies has not yet investigated how teachers’ commenting beliefs and practices change over time, particularly graduate teaching assistants’ (GTAs’) commenting practices. GTAs are an important subgroup of composition instructors to study because not only do they teach a considerable number of first-year composition (FYC) classes across the country, they are also the future of the profession. Indistinct Boundaries And Intersections: The Role Of Threshold Concepts And Disposition In Students With Early College Credit, Kathy Sanders Rose

This qualitative study investigates knowledge transfer in college students

whose high school Advanced Placement (AP) or dual credit (DC) English courses

enabled them to opt out of the first level of composition at Iowa State University

(ISU). Although early college credit (ECC) students’ university writing

performances have been studied, writing transfer has not been adequately

studied in this population before. The influence of these students’ lived

experiences require more consideration from scholars because of the growing

number of students who enter advanced university classes by virtue of credits

earned in high school.

This study investigates the similarities and differences of visual communication practices and conventions in the composition and biological sciences disciplines. Although scholars and instructors in Writing across the Curriculum (WAC) and composition have examined disciplinary differences in written communication, little is known about disciplinary differences of visual communication. While writing has been the central focus of composition classes, visuals are often key components of the composing process for individuals working in natural sciences fields like the biological sciences.

Framed by the larger questions of digital representation and course management systems, I examine how instructors perceive customized student profile on course management systems. For this exploratory study, I have surveyed 41 instructors and interviewed 9 instructors of English 150 and 250 in the English Department to examine how these instructors use both CMS and student profiles inside and outside of the classroom at Iowa State University.
