ABSTRACT

A phenomenological approach was used with this study to give a voice to individuals who are incarcerated for the purpose of understanding their past educational experiences in the areas of academics, personal/social, and career exploration. The study included interviews with 25 individuals who are incarcerated and who were purposefully selected to represent people from two groups: those previously known and those unknown by the researcher. Only individuals who are incarcerated who resided in an Iowa Correctional Facility participated in the study. A 45-60 minute semi-structured interview was conducted with each incarcerated individual. This qualitative study explored perceptions of graduate students who experienced their learning as life-changing in a two-course leadership development series. Using a phenomenological methodology, participants were former students who declared in an unprompted manner to the faculty leader, either during engagement in the series or after completing the course, that their learning was life-changing. There has been a limited body of research on Asian American students, specifically regarding community college attendance and the transfer process. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore and understand how Asian American transfer students navigate the community college, their transfer processes, as well as their post-transfer experiences. Using Critical Race Theory as the guiding framework for this study, five themes emerged: parents' expectations, academic majors, a sense of community, old and alone, and class matters. This research examined aspects of Myers-Briggs® (MBTI®) preferences and academic success in the first college semester. Precollege characteristics of ACT and class rank, academic performance during the first semester of college, and MBTI preference were analyzed for their significance among students within a learning community at a Midwest research university, fall 2004 to fall 2011. Statistical analyses were completed to determine if there is a relationship between type preference and academic success. This qualitative study explores the civic engagement experiences of six student participants who identify as African American, Asian, Latino/a and Native American. Considering the emphasis the previous research has put on multicultural students' lack of participation in civic engagement (Foster-Bey, 2008; Levine, 2009; Verba, Scholzman & Brady, 1995) and current efforts to reform civic education (Sherrod, Torney-Purta & Flanagan, 2010), the specific goal of this thesis is to bring the voices of the multicultural student participants into current discussions on civic engagement.

Using phenomenology as a methodological framework, the participants were purposefully selected from a large, land-grant, Midwestern university to take part in semi-structured interviews. Data were coded, thematically analyzed and organized into two areas: (1) sense of belonging; and (2) making sense of civic engagement.

Sense of belonging was found to have a profound impact on the participants' experiences of civic engagement. Defined by the participants as a feeling of connectedness, sense of belonging motivated them to seek out civic engagement opportunities and to stay focused to perform their civic-related activities. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of sleep on academic performance and job performance. A total of 172 undergraduate students completed an on-line questionnaire and their GPAs were obtained from the registrar's office. Participants were divided into three groups based on their employment status as follows: students who worked in the hospitality industry, students who worked in other industries, and students not working. Data were analyzed using t-tests, principal component analysis, and stepwise regression.
