This dissertation responds to two aspects of the homesickness literature: its characterization as a mental health concern, and its lack of empirical attention in the United States. The purpose of this study was to develop a theoretical understanding of homesickness oriented to an affirming and sociocultural lens, and to do so in the context of current higher education settings in the U.S. Using grounded theory and arts-based inquiry methodologies, homesickness was explored from multiple perspectives by using participant data. This study examined the perceptions of white faculty teaching in rural community college in hopes of identifying how these faculty understand or appreciate the importance of diversity in their institution’s commitment and in their classroom. Case study methodology was used to examine the perceptions of six white faculty in one rural institution in the Midwest. This study focused on building a profile of characteristics of community college (CC) athletics coaches in Iowa and on exploring the possible relationships among these characteristics. Using a mixed-method research design that incorporates SPSS quantitative analysis of a survey and seven semi-structured interviews, the research data draws a clearer picture of what these CC intercollegiate athletics coaches look like, what they do and go through in order to coach, and why they coach.
