The purpose of this qualitative case study was to examine how two faculty integrate equity, diversity, inclusion, and social justice (EDISJ) within their work with doctoral education at an AAU institution within two different disciplines. This study examined the perceptions of white faculty teaching in rural community college in hopes of identifying how these faculty understand or appreciate the importance of diversity in their institution’s commitment and in their classroom. Case study methodology was used to examine the perceptions of six white faculty in one rural institution in the Midwest. Collegiate Schemas: The Influence Of Institutional Met Expectations On Tenure-Track Faculty Job Satisfaction, Jason L. Pontius

"Met expectations" research into job satisfaction (Locke, 1976; Porter & Steers, 1973) has shown that the expectations employees bring to their jobs influence their overall job satisfaction. At colleges and universities, faculty job satisfaction is important because it can provide a measure of overall institutional effectiveness (Cameron, 1978), and can directly influence decisions to leave the institution (Mobley, 1977; Smart, 1990; Zhou & Volkwein, 2004). This study used multiple regression analyses to determine if tenure-track faculty job satisfaction is influenced by the differences between the colleges and universities, as measured by institutional characteristics, where faculty earned their bachelor's and doctorate degrees and their current institution of employment. This study posited that faculty form mental models or schemas of college and university work environments based on their undergraduate and graduate school experiences. Abstract

This study provides better understanding of the practices and habits of thought of two high-functioning public institutions. Both schools, New England College and Midwest State University have received consistently high rankings from commercial ratings publications like U.S. News and World Report, and consistently high and often improving scores on the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE). Both schools studied had consistent success despite the economic challenge of their baccalaureate focus and the rapidly changing higher education marketplace.

Over the past few decades, institutions of higher education have increased their dependence on part-time faculty members (Gappa & Leslie, 1993). Factors influencing this trend include: (a) increases in instruction-related costs relative to revenues; (b) efforts by academic administrators to achieve staffing flexibility; (c) the number of individuals who have been unable to obtain full-time teaching positions; and (d) the growth of community colleges which traditionally have employed large percentages of part-time faculty members (Valadez & Antony, 2001; NCES, 2000).
