The purpose of this thesis was to use qualitative research methodologies to better understand motivations and barriers to exercise for university students at campus recreation. The secondary purpose was to identify any correlations between physical activity habits and academic success. Ethnographic data obtained from a positive deviance sample and critically analyzed with feminist and postmodern theory could provide additional validation for campus recreation's value in positively contributing to the academic success of university students.

This study veers from the traditional perspective of examining school efficiency or productivity as a cost minimizing process, in which educational inputs are minimized to achieve maximum outputs (student performance). Instead, it provides a critical examination of the dominant, cost minimizing assumption associated with efficiency models and suggest schools instead behave similarly to budget maximizers as presented in Niskanen’s (1971) seminal budget maximizing framework. This study focused on building a profile of characteristics of community college (CC) athletics coaches in Iowa and on exploring the possible relationships among these characteristics. Using a mixed-method research design that incorporates SPSS quantitative analysis of a survey and seven semi-structured interviews, the research data draws a clearer picture of what these CC intercollegiate athletics coaches look like, what they do and go through in order to coach, and why they coach.

Recognizing the need for companies and organizations to retain employees, one of the topics given very little attention in the research is non-attendance in face-to-face training. This study presents findings from the analysis of archival data from a 2013 employee education survey. Exploratory factor analyses were conducted on two sets of data exploring barriers to participation in employee-development education classes. Extrinsic factors were identified as ‘more important things take priority’ and ‘circumstances beyond the employee’s control’. Intrinsic factors were identified as ‘personal motivation challenges’. The purpose of this study was to assess hotel employees' perceptions of their present supervisors' servant leadership (SL) behaviors and the relationship of these behaviors with hotel employees' self-reported affective commitment (AC). There were 127 hotel employees who filled out the web-based surveys completed by 127 hotel employees working in the State of Iowa. The results indicated that hotel employees perceived their present supervisors' SL behaviors differently based on demographics. This multi-case study explored individual and organizational perspective change by analyzing two long-term, management-supported professional development courses within the Cooperative Extension Service (CES). Data sources consisted of a survey of course participants, and interviews of selected participants and course designers. More than one half of the participants in both courses self-reported a perspective change, although only 5 of the 16 participant interviews revealed premise reflection--a necessary condition in this study for a perspective change. The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of sleep on academic performance and job performance. A total of 172 undergraduate students completed an on-line questionnaire and their GPAs were obtained from the registrar's office. Participants were divided into three groups based on their employment status as follows: students who worked in the hospitality industry, students who worked in other industries, and students not working. This study utilized the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and the Self-Directed Learning Readiness Scale (SDLRS) with a sample of 250 professional firefighters.
