State Political Culture And The Affordability Of Higher Education : A Multivariate Analysis Of The Impact Of State Higher Education Boards On The Cost Of Attending College., Sara Elizabeth Yount

The purpose of this study was to understand variance in state system performance of affordability using variables describing the state political environment and the structure of state higher education boards. The researcher utilized the National Center for Public Policy in Higher Education's Measuring Up (2006) grade for the dependent variable. Three control variables were examined: (a) institutional strength of the governor, (b) professionalism of the state legislature, and (c) impact of the special interest groups. The independent variable was state higher education boards. Three levels existed for this variable: (a) consolidated governing board, (b) coordinating board, and (c) planning/service agency. …

In the Introduction to What is "College-Level" Writing?, editors Patrick Sullivan and Howard Tinberg state that the title asks "one of the most important questions in our profession" (xiii). However, even after 418 pages of essays written from the perspectives of high school teachers, college instructors, students, and administrators, the answer remains elusive because college-level writing does not, in fact, start in college - it starts in high school - where high school teachers believe they are instilling in their college-bound students the writing skills required by post-secondary institutions. This dissertation is an inquiry into the educational leadership style of Marvin Summers Pittman, April 12, 1882-February 27, 1954. Pittman was a transformational leader with a vision to set goals that sometimes appeared to be outside the box during his time as an educational leader. Pittman introduced new and innovative programs in education, including his zone plan for teacher training, and theories for the consolidation of schools.
